I don't watch Supernatural but that secret+pileup made me irrationally dislike Dean a little bit, hahaha. I have a feeling if I watched the show, Sam would be my favorite.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Not the OP

I think it's cool if Sam wound up your favorite. He's an awesome character. Please don't take him as your favorite because of these two secrets though. Both OPs have phenomenally bad takes on canon. All this stuff that they're talking about making Sam happy was great television (well, mostly - the stuff with Amelia was poorly put together even though I liked her and Sam as a couple) but most of it tied back to things that horrified Sam and made him miserable. Just as an example, RoboSam was hot as fuck and I'd have watched ten seasons of him going out making people uncomfortable, but RoboSam =/= Sam and Sam himself as a character was horrified by what RoboSam had done and how he had behaved.

Can you please explain though why you'd dislike Dean because of these two comments? I'm always lost when people say they dislike a canon character because of his/her fans just in general but from what I remember of the other thread it wasn't even Dean!girls in particular talking about him. I only remember one anon who specifically said they liked Dean best. It seems kinda unfair to me to dislike a character based on a couple of really off base secrets, I guess. (If you dislike him because of the character himself, that's again totally cool. I get it, he's not for everyone and that's fine. I just don't get it if you decide not to like him because of a handful of people on FS?)

I'm not going to be taking anyone as my favorite because I have no intention of watching this show. I have no idea what RoboSam is. I don't know who Amelia is. You are saying things that I have no context to work from. It just seems like Dean has a MASSIVE AMOUNT OF FANGIRLS over Sam and I will typically like the less loved character. See Scott from Teen Wolf.

Anyway, if I associate a character with really obnoxious fans I will stop liking that character, shrug. It's really not that big a deal.

Scott's awesome! He's my favorite on Teen Wolf, though Alison comes in at a very, very close second. If you like Alison, you'd probably like Sam - they both tend to be serious, are fiercely devoted and protective, and both have been manipulated by people they thought they could trust into making HUGE mistakes with horrible consequences for other people. I can't think of who Scott is like on SPN. Cas, maybe? But not really. I see Sam and Alison as being very similar though.

Dean actually doesn't have a MASSIVE amount of fangirls. He's the more popular character outside of fandom, among casual viewers, but inside of fandom, Sam and Castiel are the ones with the most fans. Comms like FandomSecrets may give the wrong impression about which character has the most fans if only because even casual SPN fans may take the time to comment on a secret here, even if they're otherwise not at all active in fandom. Dean is the second favorite character for a lot of people, maybe? Or at least he's shipped with their actual favorite. But not many people in SPN fandom have him as their actual favorite these days and he's received a fair bit of hate on secrets here recently.

Anyway, I didn't want to write to get you to change your mind or anything. I just wanted to give more context for what the actual situation is. You're absolutely correct though. It's really not a big deal! :)

I do the same thing. I gave up "The Hunger Games," because all of the fans I'd had contact with were all really obnoxious jerks. I'm sure there are some nice fans out there, but I've already moved on.

And yes, there are massive amounts of Dean love that don't own up to Dean's bad sides. But I know nice Dean fans, too. *shrugs*

You know, to be honest, it is comments like this that alienate me from the SPN fandom. There's this tendency (in every fandom, but I see it more often in the SPN fandom) to act like there's a lot at stake regarding tiny issues like which character you prefer. If you like Dean best, if you like Sam best, if you like [Fill in the blank] best, you are watching the same show. Liking Dean/Sam/Other best doesn't change the way you watch it. Sam having more fans than Dean wouldn't change the show itself, so why does it matter if a random person online does or doesn't like the character? More than that, she already said that she doesn't watch it.

It doesn't matter if Nan watches SPN or if she doesn't watch it. It doesn't matter if she theoretically thinks she'd prefer one brother over the other. There is nothing at stake here but you're acting like it's really important for her to know every detail about the canon before making a very important decision, when A) there's no decision to make since she doesn't watch the show, and B) it doesn't matter who anybody likes or dislikes.

Wow, anon, that's a lot of hostility. I'm guessing you missed my response to Nan where I confirmed that it's not a big deal? I fully agree that who someone's favorite is isn't a big deal at all. And I'm totally down with Sam being Nan's (or whoever's) favorite if that winds up being the case. Nor not being Sam, whatever.

My issue was that Nan said that these two secrets made her predisposed to like one character and to dislike another one. That didn't seem right to me because the secrets themselves are very biased and not even based in canon.

Far from thinking that it's important that Nan know "every detail about the canon", I only brought up examples used in the original secret and those only because Nan said they were basing their decision to like/dislike characters on that secret. I wanted to clarify that the original secret poster's stance was very far removed from anything dealing with actual canon. My goal wasn't to slam Nan with ~all the canon~ or whatever, just to showcase that the stuff she was basing a decision to like (and dislike) characters off of wasn't even valid.

TBH, I think that you're the one overreacting here. It's an open forum and if you comment on something without knowing the full situation then you can expect that someone who does know will respond. It's all silly fandom stuff, of course. No one is going to deny it. But I didn't take my original response seriously, nor do I care who Nan likes or doesn't like, if Nan ever decides to watch the show. You're the one jumping in to scold people, which is extra silly as I had already stated the point you were scolding me for to begin with!

Maybe read the full subthread before starting a lecture next time? Just a thought.

Actually, again, you're overreacting because I was calmly explaining how I interpreted your comments. And, yes, in my opinion, you do come off as though you have something riding on her answer.

This is just getting sad, dude.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, please don't go into Supernatural disliking a character because of reasons like that. That secret and the ''pileup'' were both ridiculous. I'm not sure why it has to be one or the other with this fandom. Why does it have to be Sam vs. Dean? Is it impossible to like both?

I seriously have no intention of going into Supernatural disliking a character.

TBH, I started out as a Dean!girl, but still liked Sammy plenty, then when I rewatched the series with a friend bc she wanted to know (actually you don't need the reasons), I found myself becoming more sympathetic to Sam, as I had done a lot of growing up myself, and therefore understood his character a little more.

Blah blah blah, TL;DR: yes it is possible to like both. They both have their pluses and minuses, and they're wrapped in some pretty attractive packaging. ;)

I love both, enjoy both, have loved watching them both 'grow up'. I think the really polarized fans just 'talk' the loudest.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-26 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
Have to admit, I had the exact same reaction. I don't watch Supernatural much and have no investment in the characters when I do watch, but the Sam!bashing pile-on in response to a harmless Sam!loving secret left me feeling irrationally defensive and anti-Dean -- since most of it had blatant pro-Dean bias -- and I've never seen anything to suggest either guy isn't deserving of happiness, or that either of them can be more of a dick than the other, so I don't get the hostility over someone wanting Sam happy..

(Anonymous) 2013-08-26 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
da

But most of the response was confusion about how anything in the original secret made Sam happy? Aside from the stuff with Amelia, it was all pretty much the extreme low lights of Sam's life. And for that matter, like one person was talking about Dean. Shesh, don't go getting mad at Dean and Dean fans because of one person in an entire thread!
