Tell me your feelings about tagging for fic

[personal profile] queerwolf 2013-08-25 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I just read a pretty good Teen Wolf fic. The whole time though, I kept wondering "Why didn't the author tag for this? Or this?" Most of the tags that were there were those useless ones that reflect the author's thoughts/feelings about the fic or characters, while the fact that it was a dystopian AU future-fic in which Stiles' father had been killed wasn't in the tags anywhere :/ I like to know what I'm about to read.

I hate conversational tags and like content tags.

honestly, a lot of the time I just use the "author chose not to use archive warnings" and let people read at their own risk

I mean, I tag for pairings and I do a summary but I don't usually bother with much else. I do really appreciate the "author chose not to use archive warnings" tag.

+1. You are a good person and you should feel good.

bless that tag. I dislike giving away too much of what's happening in my fic (like, I'm not warning for character death if it would take something away from the story or be a major spoiler for it) so I'm glad to have that one handy to let people know "hey, there could be some fucked up shit here but I'm not telling you about it so either roll the dice or consider skipping this one"

I like this.

I don't need fics to be tagged for character death or bad/sad endings. If it's a long fic, I treat it like a novel and if people over tag their work, it spoils it.

I do get why people appreciate the tags, however. I'm just ok with not having them.

Tag pairings (major) and characters (but only if they are actually in the fic as more than a mention). Also, tag the characters/pairings in order of how much fic time they have.

Tag for kinks (the non common ones) and triggers (the big ones). CHARACTER DEATH SHOULD ALWAYS BE TAGGED. I wish people would tag for unhappy endings, but I understand why some authors don't (if I have a bad feeling, I will scroll to the ending to check).

Maybe tag common plot points so people will search for (kid fic, deaging, dystopia, future fic) and genre (humor, angst, drama, horror).

Then read through the list of characters you tagged, and if it is more than two, cut the tags for everyone under the top two. Read through the list of other tags, and if it comes to more than four, pick the four most important.

I love it when people tag like this and more often than not it makes me more likely to check the fic out. If I don't know what I'm getting into I'm probably just going to skip to the end to see what happens.

(Mostly because I've been burned before and don't see the point in taking the time to read something I'm not in the mood for.)

I too wish people would tag for happy/unhappy endings. I understand why they don't, but still. And yeah, character death should always be tagged or at the very least put in notes. And AUs. If it's an AU please for the love of god that. I am sick of having to ctrl+F "werewolves" to see if what I'm reading is a Teen Wolf human AU.

I disagree about character death. since that's usually supposed to be a surprise, why spoil it? :-/ Say "choose not to warm" or something like "dark themes". Not that I'm against tagging for those things if you choose to, but I don't like to see them myself, or use them for that matter.

CHARACTER DEATH SHOULD ALWAYS BE TAGGED.

Yes. Please. I was reading a fic today that turned out to be a character death fic. Fortunately, I got bored halfway through so scrolled to the end to see what happened.

I seem to belong to the secret society of people who do not dislike tumblr-style tags. In fact, I like them. A while ago I brought the question up on f!s and heard some pretty reasonable arguments against this type of tags, so now I myself either use them very gingerly or don't use them at all, but it doesn't irk me in works of other authors. It may, of course, be due to the fact that even the biggest of my fandoms are kind of small-and-comfy, and tumblr-style tagging does not mean bad writing.

It just doesn't make sense on the site. It's about organization, so random comments don't make sense as tags.

Re: Tell me your feelings about tagging for fic

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Tags, keep them concise, keep them on topic, and keep them to the major two characters. Anything more than 6 tags and you've over tagged. few things lead to skipping a story more than tagsplosions.

Too many tags are as bad for determining exactly WTF is going on as no tags.

Re: Tell me your feelings about tagging for fic

(Anonymous) 2013-08-26 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
That seems unreasonably sparse. Besides, a story can have more than two major characters (not every story is about shipping, and even among the ones that are, threesomes and moresomes exist).

A story should have enough tags to tell me everything I want or need to know in order to make an informed decision about whether to read it -- no more, and certainly no less. Six tags, inclusive of characters and pairings, is not nearly enough information for most fics, especially longer ones.

Tag the genre(s), tag the triggers, tag what kind of AU it is if it's an AU
Avoid everything else, and avoid fics that tag everything else

I hope that this isn't in reference to the fic that nan posted above, because if it is, it's in really poor taste.

If there are too many tags or feels tags, I don't read. It's a generalization but if I see a bunch of "feels" tags, I figure the fic is going to be immature so it's not worth the time.

Outside of fandom/category/pairing/characters, I appreciate tags for community (if it's part of a fest), relevant information (like "felching" or "bdsm" if it's porn), and timeline context (like "Season 2" or "Post-series" or "AU"). I think genre (fluff or angst or adventure) are clear from the summary.

Tag for pairings, the main character[s], and the major triggers. If you've got a specific trope, then it'd be nice - and would probably help people find it - but it's not something that really has to be tagged, imo.

Re: Tell me your feelings about tagging for fic

idk, Tag the main characters of the story, tag the major bad things like surprise child rape or whatever or use CNTW + a rating, DEFINITELY TAG FOR OC'S IF THEY ARE A MAIN CHAR. >:[ I'm reading fanfic here, not original fiction

Re: Tell me your feelings about tagging for fic

(Anonymous) 2013-08-26 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Some people above mentioned only tagging major characters, and I do hope people would do that. When I try to search for fic about a Marvel character, I come across so many fics where they tagged every single team member of the main pairing and they're mostly just cameos that make the tag useless. And when I try the fandom tag, there aro SO many fics with a wall of character tags but again they are just cameos in a pairing fic.

You don't have to tag every single character that shows up for a second. You don't have to tag every single character in your fandom if they're not focused upon.

Personally

(Anonymous) 2013-08-26 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
My tagging habits

I tag for Characters who will be relevant. I tag for a concept that people might not like , and I always tag for orignal characters. I write stories with them because i like putting something of mine in a fanfic...otherwise i just feel like i'm playing with someone else's toys and...sorta lose interest. But I try to do it well .

That said, I'm not one to trick people who don't like OCs into reading my fics. I'm not any any damn crusade to get the world to read my fic and I DON'T think that I will magically be able to convert people who backbutton at the sight of an OC to like my story now matter how well I try. Because they just don't like it and that's okay.

My only problem is when I get people who tell either complain when I've already freakin' warned them or sit there and lecture me that I should write this or that because people will flame me or not like it. I KNOW people are here to read about characters they like. Which is why I work to give those characters a good role in the story and keep the focus on them. The exception to that is when I'm writing elsewhere or setting (for example a story about Hogwarts directly after the war from the POV of a muggle born.) If I get actual critique to make my story better good. If I get told to take my story down because one person hates it for something I've warned for I'll be like "no. Read something else." . If they call me butthurt for that? I'll laugh at them.

Also anything that could be dark or disturbing I try to give warning for. Even if I don't want to give away something like a death I'll just put graphic violence on it. I don't aim to trigger my viewers.

Others Tagging Habits

I believe that tags ideally should be like a content label. Characters, content warning major ships. Special snowflake-y tags are annoying but they tell me I can just browse on past the fic. nothing to attack them over. People make their own choices yo.

Now trigger warnings are important to me first of all. Well for things like violence or rape or the like. (Don't abuse trigger warnings. like Tumblr does.) Use them with reason. Torture needs a trigger warning. Dasies don't. Racism and Homopobia would do with a content warning. Trigger warn for the presence of white people and I will fucking mock you I'm not even joking.

As for tagging characters and ships. If they make a significant appearance in the story tag that stuff. Tag for a character hat sticks around for two chapters. Don't tag for the appearance of a random pizza delivery boy. I hate seeing a character I like in the tag and then finding they only appeared once or were mentioned in passing.

Also....tag for OOC? Gee thanks for telling me why I shouldn't read the fic. Tag for character bashing? Gee thanks for telling me why I shouldn't read the fic. I don't know why people tag for these things . Like do they not even know that it's a negative thing.

That's pretty much it.
