I am down to my last $100, still have not found a job after being unemployed for over a year (I am either overqualified or don't have enough experience for the job I have my degree in), and I can't help the family I am living with pay their bills. Life is shitty. That is all.

Sorry to hear that, anon :( Being jobless sucks.

I hope your luck turns around soon.

What kind of work do you do? You can get some freelance jobs online.

There's r/forhire (http://www.reddit.com/r/forhire/) (I know Reddit is a blacklisted place for some poeple, but the specific subreddits are usually ok), for example. Or try doing some work at the Mechanical Turk (https://www.mturk.com/mturk/), but they only take US citizens for workers and the pay is pretty low. I know none of these places substitute an actual job, but maybe you can get some quick cash to get you through these difficult times.

Best of luck.

I wouldn't recommend mturk, unless it's really the last available option. The pay is horrible and if the requester decides that they won't pay you at all, there's nothing you can do. You might get some pocket money, but that's it.

I use this script to avoid grouchy or scammy requesters: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/86975
But yeah, I've been on it for three years and have made $500 total. I think the most I ever got at once was $20 for a two-part survey, and I don't have a bank account or anything, so I just use it to order small stuff from Amazon.

See also http://taskrabbit.com in some areas - I've met people who've made decent part-time income from it. Unfortunately it's limited to just a few cities. (ETA: ooh, it's expanded since I last looked at it, but it's still only in 14 US cities.)

I don't suppose skipping over some of the qualifications in your resume would be a good idea?

OP

I honestly don't know. I mean, some of my references are college buddies, so I guess I could tell them not to tell them i went to college.

:( Unemployment is such a fucking grind. I will say, I'm sure that even if you're not helping with bills you're probably helping the people you're with in a lot of other ways.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-30 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
That sounds really scary, Anon. Can you do any temp or freelance work to tide yourself over?

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-08-30 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
I have looked at some online stuff but honestly, it is so hard to figure out which are scams and which are not.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-30 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
There were no jobs in my area so I went overseas. IDK about other countries, but Korea has a lot of programs where all you need is to be a native english speaker with a college degree, no TESL or whatever required. After college I worked a fast food job for a while, saving what I could, and then went to Korea on the TaLK program--they reimburse you for your flight as soon as you arrive, room and board during orientation, school pays for your rent, food is cheap here. about 1,400USD per month for 15 teaching hours a week, and after I get some experience in this program I can move to a higher-paying program.

Now you might, for whatever reason, have zero interest in this in PARTICULAR...but I woulda never considered this job and actually I love it. And the fast food place didn't give a shit that I was overqualified. Good luck, I'm sorry things suck for you rn. ㅜㅜ

Uhhh. I would actually be interested in learning more about this. I have heard of programs like that but always thought they were scams
