...Does anyone else think some of these are subjective as fuck?

I mean, people are intelligent in different ways and can be more or less educated depending on the topic. "Attractive" is in the eye of the beholder. Someone with a "standard" accent in most of the US would stick out like a sore thumb in the deep south or upper midwest.

I'm guessing from your outrage that you got to call bingo and are now trying to find a way to justify your persecution complex.

I think that's sort of the point. Logically, yes, these things are subjective, but you'll find that, say, people with college degrees are regarded far more highly than a high-school dropout, regardless of their actual intelligence. The perception of intelligence is the determining factor here.

Attractiveness standards affect women (and those perceived as women) far more than men (and those perceived as men). An "ugly" woman is less likely to be hired than a "pretty" one - even if it's the same woman who just simply put on makeup and made herself socially acceptable in her presentation.

I do agree about the accent one, though - that's rather more regional than any of the others. In the New England area, because states with different accents are so close to each other, there's not much issue for somebody having a Boston or New York accent in New Hampshire or Maine. But if you stick somebody with a Southern accent in, say, California, they're going to be mocked rather mercilessly.

Actually, jut change that to "Any non-Southern part of the US" and "Mocked mercilessly, and treated as if they are dumb/racist" and you'd still be on the money, sad as it is.

As far as "perception of intelligence" goes, you can also argue that, in most day-to-day situations, you form your first impressions long before you learn how much time someone spent in school. And in my experience, people tend to be all over the map when it comes to common sense/communication skill/general knowledge/"sharpness"/etc., regardless of amount of formal education completed. And different people can form different impressions of the same person. One man's "quick-witted and outspoken" is another's "loud-mouthed dumbass," and so on.

The second point about the same woman with and without makeup is kind of similar, actually!

Seriously, I wasn't sure how "intelligent" or "attractive" was supposed to be applied. Like, I'm literate and symmetrical, that does count?
