Re: Check Your Privilege Bingo

Even if most of those don't apply to me, I am majorly more privileged than most people, I am born and live in Norway... I can't get much more privileged than that, I don't need a chart to tell me that, it is something we get told constantly.

And I guess if anyone is curious 9 of the things applied to me, possibly 10, does tall count when I am exactly the average height for my gender, birth year and country of origin?

Other things don't apply to me at all, I don't need to be christian and major political parties won't count when we have about 8 of them, for me to be privileged. Nor does native English speaker, though I get creds for being fluent(ish) in English, but mostly everyone in Norway speaks English (it isn't really impressive before you start hitting 3d of 4th language)

Quick add on, what on earth does "well connected family" even mean? Is it having family members being in a position of power? Or what? If anyone could explain that one to me I would be quite happy!

You also don't get much more arrogant than that.

That follows from the "it is something we get told constantly".

Also why everyone benefit from leaving their little duck pond (or "andedam" in Norwegian) once in a while, both physically and mentally.

Or self aware? Had I grown up in most other countries in the world I would have probably been homeless for most of my childhood, I would not have had the same ability as I do to get an University education, I would probably not have gotten my health issues fixed because my family could not have afforded it, not to mention all the countries in the world that is in war or serious economic crisis.

So yes being born in a country that makes sure that everyone can afford a place to live, clothes, free healthcare and food automatically makes all those citizens more privileged than those who don't live in such a country, yes.

It means (I'm assuming) that your family knows a lot of people, so you have a large social network at your fingertips simply because your family happens to know these people and not because you worked to gain those connections. With a large network, you're likely to have an easier time gaining support in times of need, and getting a job. The first full-time job I had, I got because my parents were friends with the store owner, who needed a trustworthy person to help her manage the store.

The card is very US-centric, though, yes. And also poorly-worded.

Ah that does make sense! Though I would not have thought of getting a job because your family knows someone as being privileged, even if it is one of those things that affects me, as finding work when you don't have a lot of experience and your family can't help out is really hard, I just think of it as unfair.

"what on earth does "well connected family" even mean"

I'd presume it means having a family with history/power/influence. Like, for example, "legacy" children for schools. Someone is much, much, much more likely to get into an Ivy League college like Harvard or Yale if their parents or grandparents attended. Or someone is much less likely to have a criminal record for a minor offence if they have relatives in positions of influence that can convince the people involved that it was a minor enough thing to be brushed under the carpet/go away.

to give another context for "well connected family", I went to school for a professional degree and I do feel that people who come from wealthy families where that is common/expected have something of an advantage, not only in getting their first job. No one in my family has the slightest idea what kind of work I could do. Of course that can be simulated with networking and lots of background research, but it's something!

also lol at the person calling you arrogant for acknowledging your own privilege
