There are two kinds of people nodding along to that comic. One is a group of people who are pretty well informed on progressive arguments and ideas and are fed up of bullies misusing legitimate arguments to stoke their own outrage spree.

The other are bullies themselves who believe that they are being oppressed because they aren't "allowed" to call sluts sluts anymore etc. To them that cartoon is a hilarious satire of that bitch who ruined their whole night by not laughing when they told the hillarious gangbanger joke. They too enjoy an entirely misplaced sense of outrage.

*Shrug* It's where we're at. As long as we're all reacting in memes, stock rants, and copypasta and skipping the actual conversation part, it's an impasse.

I think the important thing is, don't be a bully - and there's an end on't.

I agree that that is an issue whenever you make fun of certain arguments/groups, but in this particular case the first seemed to be going after such low-hanging fruit intelligence-wise that I figured it was too hard to disagree with? I was a fool.

Like in the first panel. The demonstration of the thinking "You vastly prefer A to B? Well then you hate B. AND ME TOO. >:C" This is simpleton asshole logic and it affects people on all sides in arguments. If you're (for example) liberal, then you think of the conservatives that annoy you, and vice versa. I see this one as universal as making fun of "dumb people" is.

I do see that the later panels get more specific and single out certain trends, but I thought overall it was still kind of tame. The super butthurt response took me totally by surprise.

And this is why I wish tumblr facilitated actual conversations more...

I mean, not that LJ/DW/[insert forum/thread based board here] don't have their share of stock "look how cool I am by dismissing my opponent's argument" reactions, but at least the threads have a central location, people can jump in and have their comments seen regardless of how many people follow them, and when it's over and done with it's actually OVER AND DONE WITH.

It's actually one of the most bizarre things I've ever seen. Post A will show up on my dash, with its own set of 5+ comments, likes, etc, and it's cool. Then several months later Post A will show up on my dash again, only this time diverging from comment 2 or 3 into its own separate beast, and sometimes I agreed with the original but not this newcomer, but they both have my "like" since the likes carry over and it's a mess.

I understood why fandom moved there since pretty pictures and gifs and all that, but I used to wonder why the SJW crowd made it their home since it really is not a good platform for conversation based movements. Then realized they don't want conversations, just echo chambers.

Weeeeell, Social Justice is a fandom now. That's all there is to that.

I mirror ever sentiment in this post. Though I am on Tumblr a lot, so I guess I'm just feeding the beast.

Eh, I'm on tumblr too, and - in all honesty - it's fine to be on tumblr. Like I mentioned, it's got a lot of pretty pictures and gifs and it's great for that. It was made for that.

I do think and wish there was a balance though. The internet people I'm closest to are those that I both participate in discussions with here/LJ and follow on tumblr. Because outside of discussion starter threads, I don't really like to talk about myself, I'm too busy with RL to post super long meta essays, and sometimes you just want to scroll through a bunch of cool/funny/pretty/fandom things.

If it's just LJ/DW I don't post often and frequently enough in the right threads to maintain a daily connection, and if it's just tumblr I don't ever get to form that connection in the first place.
