[Stargate Atlantis]

I'm sorry about your mother, OP. That being said, it surprises me that that fandom has lasted this long. I'm sure you could find something else, though, if you give it a chance.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-01 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Why does it surprise you that the fandom has lasted this long? Lots of shows/books/movies are long since over and still have active fandoms.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-01 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

And even more die off quickly once the source material stops being made.

I think that a lot of the shows/books/movies that are "over" but which have active fandoms still USUALLY have related or tied-in canon products that are still coming out (or which have recently come out), though. There hasn't been any new Stargate of ANY stripe for quite a while, feels like. It's different from something like Star Trek: TOS, which has spin-off series STILL coming out, or Transformers, or Lord of the Rings, or Digimon, or um that's all I can think of rn but you can see what I mean.

I mean, it's not like Stargate Atlantis fandom is really DEAD, though. It's just gone really really quiet and slow, for as far as I can tell. It's effectively dead for anyone who requires things like formal fic exchanges or regular fic output or a decent ongoing level of discussion in some fandom forum somewhere in order to consider themselves part of a fandom... but I'm sure there will always be some really devoted fans who keep the faith in their own hearts, and will for as long as they're still alive!!!!

(Anonymous) 2013-09-02 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
There's still fic being written every day, although not nearly as much as in the heyday. Which makes sense. There are tumblr's, LJ's and Facebook pages devoted to Stargate and the people who were associated with it. One sad thing, next year is Creation's last soley Stargate Chicago con. Truly the fandom has shrunk but it's still there percolating.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-02 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
I really don't want to.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-01 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
You're not the only one who is sad about this, anon. Though I don't have the same reasons as you, I can absolutely related to using fandom as an escape or even a form of therapy. I only hope that you're able to find other fannish pursuits/outlets that help you deal with your grief. (Are you on tumblr? There's a small, but vocal contingent of McSheppers over there!)

I just don't understand why they're calling it quits this year. It bugs me because the decision to end it seems so arbitrary and without good reason. If the people running it are tired of doing so, then hand it off! It's always a popular event and it keeps the fandom going - why end it now?

I have this same issue with a few other fandom fest type activities (Paperlegends, I'm looking at you!). There would likely be plenty of people willing to take over and keep these events running! Why stop now?

At least there's still SGA_Santa! And the SGA Reverse_Bang.

Alternately, if the people who were doing it stop doing it, START YOUR OWN. Ask if they'll help, and if the say no, figure it out. Otherwise quit complaining.

[Picture is a screen-capture of the profile page of the LiveJournal community "McShep_Match". Fandom is marked as "Stargate: Atlantis".]

I'm so disturbed that this is the last McShep Match. My mother died a few months ago and fandom let's me get out of my head for a while.

I'm scared that this fandom will disappear and it'll be just me and my grief. I shouldn't care this much, but I do.

I'm sorry for your loss. *hugs*

I don't think the fandom will ever die. There will always be at least a few people writing in the Gateverse.

Now that I have finished my dissertation and had my baby, one of my plans is to write more fanfiction. I'm almost finished with an SG-1 fic, and SGA is definitely on my list of fandoms to write in again.

I don't know why this sentence amuses me, but it does. Congratulations on both.

Heeee. I got to have two babies in 2013. LOL Writing a dissertation while pregnant is not a life choice I would recommend to others.

Thanks for the congrats! <3

(Anonymous) 2013-09-02 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
Haha! I had a friend who said nothing inspired her to finish so much as getting pregnant, and the feeling that if she didn't finish writing before the baby, she'd probably always find an excuse not to finish.

*nods*

That was my thought exactly. I knew if I didn't finish before Fiona got here, it was just never going to happen. Plus, I was at the end of my allotted time anyway.

SGA rec thread

[personal profile] lunabee34 2013-09-01 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe this would be a good place for people to rec their favorite SGA fanworks. I know I'd like to find some fic that's new to me.

Here are my SGA recs: http://lunabee34.dreamwidth.org/tag/recs:+sga

I haven't read any recent SGA fic so I am going through your recs with interest. Thanks for linking!
I don't know any newer stuff, but I listened to Fayjay's podfic of Gypsies Tramps and Thieves by Auburn a few months ago and if podfic is your thing I cannot recommend it enough.

No problem! I hope you find some stuff you like!

I haven't really listened to a lot of podfic, mostly because I'm rarely in a situation where I'd be able to listen to something that's very long. I'll remember your rec, though, for the next long car trip I have to take. Thanks!

Also, I'm in the process of making another rec post, and I know there's going to be at least one SGA fic in that batch, so refresh after awhile so you don't miss that one. :)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-02 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
My condolences regarding your mom.
I will miss this match too, as SG is now my primary fandom and it seems to be shrinking a little more every day. Love/d these guys!
And hooray for Joe Flanigan (kind of, it's John Sheppard) making it into the secrets for a third day in some fashion.
Still carrying the torch for McShep!

There's been talk of a new LJ community to replace McShep Match, so I wouldn't count the fandom out just yet! Plus, I plan to stick around for some time yet, so there'll be at least one person hanging around~

(Anonymous) 2013-09-02 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry about your mom. :(

I just stayed up till 5 AM reading McShep fics on Friday, actually, heh. They're on FFN but it seemed to me like the fandom's doing ok for itself, considering the show's been gone for years.
