Idioms/Sayings That Never Made Sense To You

(Anonymous) 2013-09-01 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Mine? Don't cry over spilt milk. To me this always seemed weird, because really, who would cry over spilt milk? It's so easy to clean up! Now cooked rice on the other hand...

Omg no.

One time I bought some milk and I was carrying it up to the house (I park on the bottom of a hill) and I dropped it and it just EXPLODED all over the driveway and it was like five bucks which to me is really expensive for a gallon of milk, and I just started sobbing. And I remembered that stupid idiom and I was just like "FUCK YOU, YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND!"

I feel for you!

I dropped a bottle of milk once, thought nothing of it, caught the bus.

Five minutes into the ride home, I realised the milk was slowly spilling through a tiny hole in the bottle, making its way down the entire bus. :|

I've had a similar milk spill situation. I didn't cry, but I'd be lying if I said I hadn't wanted to.

I understand you. I get it.

When I was a small child, I knocked an entire gallon jug of milk off the counter after my mother had just brought it home from the store, and it exploded all over the kitchen floor. I started bawling.

"Could care less"

[personal profile] ill_omened 2013-09-01 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
You could always care less. It doesn't mean anything, because there will always be a lower amount of caring, unless you literally couldn't care less.

Re: "Could care less"

(Anonymous) 2013-09-01 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
My interpretation has always been that when you say that, you're saying that you care so little you don't even care enough to use the correct saying

Re: "Could care less"

(Anonymous) 2013-09-02 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I always thought people who said it were mangling "Couldn't care less" which is the first and primary way I heard it. Sort of like people who type "could of" instead of "could've".

I've...never heard people say it that way, except online. Most people I've heard use it say "I couldn't care less".

Re: "Could care less"

(Anonymous) 2013-09-02 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
It's supposed to be couldn't care less, people who say could are just idiots.

I think it's supposed to be less about "don't get upset about little things" and more about "don't get upset about things you can't change"? It's not "the milk is not a big deal," but "the milk is already spilled and crying won't help."

Re: Idioms/Sayings That Never Made Sense To You

(Anonymous) 2013-09-01 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
This. Which may be why I always heard it as "No use crying over spilled milk."

At the drop of a hat.

I always picture a Terribly English man dropping his bowler hat and promptly bursting into tears, but I sincerely doubt that's where the phrase comes from.

Pull the other one, it's got bells on.

Like I know what it means now since I watch so much British stuff, but I don't really get where the phrase comes from.

I expect it's something jester related.

I've heard 'pull the other one' and I've heard 'I'll be there with bells on', but I've never heard 'pull the other one, it's got bells on', hmmm.

Pretty sure it refers to the bell pads that Morris dancers wear around their knees.

I had a problem with 'have your cake and eat it too' for years, since I always thought that obviously if you have your cake you can eat it, why not. But then someone explained to me that after you eat your cake you don't have it anymore.

Re: Idioms/Sayings That Never Made Sense To You

(Anonymous) 2013-09-02 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Oh thank you! Now it makes sense! It's funny because now that you mentioned it I see that if you flip the terms (you can't eat your cake and have it too), the meaning becomes more obvious. (ESL here, btw)

I still think it would make more sense the other way around, but I suspect that construction is due to the same sort of linguistic fossilization that gives us "little did they know...".

I understand that one, but it makes my brain itch every time I hear it.

Re: Idioms/Sayings That Never Made Sense To You

(Anonymous) 2013-09-02 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Confused ESL here too; I just didn't realize that "have" here was meant in the same sense as "eat". orz

Re: Idioms/Sayings That Never Made Sense To You

(Anonymous) 2013-09-02 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
I thought that was the point of the idiom. Like, it's not a big deal, it's just milk and it's gone. Don't fixate on small things you've lost.

Re: Idioms/Sayings That Never Made Sense To You

(Anonymous) 2013-09-02 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on where you spill it. If you get it onto any sort of absorbent surface and don't get it all up, it's going to reek of rancid milk in a few days.

I had a paper carton spring a leak on the way home from the grocery store, and the way the trunk of my car smelled afterwards before I was able to shampoo it was worth crying over.

Head over heels.

Heels over head would make sense. But generally speaking, your head is supposed to be over your heels.
