Teaching Abroad Anon

(Anonymous) 2013-09-02 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Does anyone know of a place to ask questions to specific people? I have been on Dave's ESL Cafe but...there seems to be A LOT of assholes. Or maybe they are trolls. Either way, looking up answers to questions usually ends with me being really discouraged and changing my mind about teaching abroad.

Honestly Dave's is probably the best place-- or at least it used to be, when I was looking for work/working in Japan. I haven't been in a while but there were always jerks on there, but in reality a lot of them make a good point; they're just not nice about it. You could try going through some threads and picking out people who seem reasonable and messaging them privately?

Is it true that it's hard to get a job as an ESL teacher if you're not white?

I've heard people having trouble in Korea

I've met plenty of non-white teachers, but most of them were with a biggish program; if you're contracting with a school/hagwon as an individual, that's when preference could come in.

I think there was an entire thread on Something Awful of people sharing their experiences about it. I'm not sure if it's still there, but you need to pay ten American dollars to make an account there to post.

Again, it's a personal decision but I think it's a good thing people are being a bit honest because it's not all roses and sunshine teaching abroad. I can't speak on Dave's ESL, but I've had some friends that love it and some that had a lot of problems.

Best of luck in your decision!

Well it isn't so much talking about the reality, but people just being assholes.

Like someone will ask an honest question (ex. Should I worry about leaving my laptop in my apartment?) and someone has an asshole answer (ex. Maybe you should leave the computer at home and get out into the real world). And then someone else will start fighting with the asshole. And the thread just devolves into that.

So I am terrified to ask question because I don't want to be lambasted by those assholes.
