so nervous...

(Anonymous) 2013-09-02 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I might be trying to buy a car tomorrow and I'm terrified. Mine's in the shop 2 days after leaving the shop for a dying problem. Mechanic thought it was fixed after replacing a $200 part the computer said was borked. But it's died again and needed towed in Sunday night. I hope it's just the fuel filter but it could be fuel pump or worse.

But its coming up on 9 years old and 100,000 miles (which has its own expensive service attached) and has a ton of cosmetic damage from hail and whatnot. The car I'm looking at is a 2011 Honda with barely 31K miles. It's also $15,500, which seems like a lot to be throwing down. But it's the best deal in my area. I'm terrified of making a mistake (after taking the lower payout insurqnce gave me so I could keep this car after the hailstorm 5 weeks ago) but it seems. Like this might be a good time to just cut my losses and get out.

Good luck, anon. I hate to think of replacing my pickup (I bought it new ten years ago), but I keep thinking...I want something more gas efficient, if nothing else (If you're gonna talk the Green Talk, you gotta be prepared to do the walk, too). Unfortunately, the cars I do like for gas conservation are so far out of my price range, they'd cost almost as much as my house. And the only other cars I like are the hotrod gas guzzlers (and still get better mileage than my truck, but still!).

Anyway, I wish you luck, and suggest you check with your insurance company to find out how much your insurance will go up, and possibly with your bank to find out how much you can afford to borrow (always cheaper than going through a dealer, believe me!).

I can't tell you what to do, but when I replaced my first car when it was 15 years old (don't remember the mileage) it was because while the repairs weren't necessarily more costly than buying a new car, the problems that needed fixing were starting to come at the rate of at least one a year and I had no idea when something might suddenly die on me. Having the security of knowing that I probably wasn't going to have my car die in the middle of nowhere or have to go several days without a car while it was in the shop (no doubt at a time when I actually needed a car) became something of real value to me. I bought a new car about 7 years ago and to this day I have had no maintenance issues. I had monthly car payments to make for several years because I couldn't afford to pay cash, not even for my cheap car, but since I paid it off, the only non-routine expense I've had was for a patch on a flat tire.
