If you can file off the serial numbers and publish it, it probably wasn't very good fanfic anyway, it was just your ideas being clumsily expressed to a ready-made audience. I honestly think the line between original and fan writing is a lot blurrier than people make it out to be...

(Anonymous) 2013-09-03 01:06 am (UTC)(link)...no, it's really not, especially if you're an obscure genfic writer instead of a BNF who writes smut. I would love to know in what world getting anything published (other than self-published) is easy, or even easier. Because in plenty of publishing circles, being a fanfic writer is an active handicap.

Of course, if you're a big enough BNF, the sheer numbers of guaranteed sales might outweigh the potential cost of being sued.
