Why do you feel this way? Jealous that your fic didn't get published? I think quality writing should be published and crap shouldn't be published. So not only shouldn't have 50 Shades been published, neither should have Twilight, so it's kind of irrelevant that 50 Shades is fanfic.

IA. There is a lot of terrible original fiction out there. If you think it's a good enough story to publish, and you change the characters enough that they are compelling on their own merits, who cares? I am thinking of Temeraire in this case.
If you can file off the serial numbers and publish it, it probably wasn't very good fanfic anyway, it was just your ideas being clumsily expressed to a ready-made audience. I honestly think the line between original and fan writing is a lot blurrier than people make it out to be...

There is a lot of terrible original fiction out there. But there's also a lot of good original fiction that doesn't get published because either the author doesn't know the right people or the houses don't know how to market it.

It's easier to publish something that started off as fanfic because it comes with both a ready-made network and a ready-made audience. It's a cheat, and that's what makes it obnoxious.

...no, it's really not, especially if you're an obscure genfic writer instead of a BNF who writes smut. I would love to know in what world getting anything published (other than self-published) is easy, or even easier. Because in plenty of publishing circles, being a fanfic writer is an active handicap.

Well that's true that that's obnoxious and sad, I don't think it's typical of people who rework fanfic into original fiction. Obviously we know about those, but seriously how many fanfic authors are doing more with their popularity than selling a bit of erotica on the side?? Very very few. And the way I see it some people are just good at self promotion. Those people are more successful, and it feels shitty. So it goes.

While it is true that demonstrating that you have a substantial pre-existing fanbase is extremely helpful in acquiring an agent (and therefore, getting traditionally published), I'm reasonably sure what they're looking for would be blog subscribers, etc., since fanfic is such a legally bizarre area.

Of course, if you're a big enough BNF, the sheer numbers of guaranteed sales might outweigh the potential cost of being sued.

Why do you immediately jump to the "jealousy" angle? Are people not allowed to dislike things in your world?

Apparently not.

Oh if only this were true.

But then I guess everyone has their guilty pleasures, I mean, I like Pretty Little Liars.
