Sorry OP, but shipping is all about the characters for me. There aren't any women characters that I like and see chemistry between in any recent shows or movies. I don't see the point in reading fic about characters I don't ship.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-04 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG EXAMINE URSELF! Don't you know if you can't find TWO women to care about in the whole fictional landscape, you must be a misogynist! #notserious

Don't you know if you can't find TWO women to care about in the whole fictional landscape, you must be a misogynist!

Honestly? If someone can't find any female characters to like in the vast, vast, vast fictional realm, I do wonder about them.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-04 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
da

I don't think much of it if they can't find two in a single fandom they'd like to ship, but if they don't like any female characters /anywhere/...yeah.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-04 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
(different anon) i only have one fandom, i don't care about other fandoms and their pairs. i'm sure there are great characters in other fandoms, but i don't wanna get into anything else.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-04 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Nahhhhh.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-04 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Thread OP

I like lots of women characters. I don't see chemistry between any two in the same canon for the things I watch.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-04 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
It's also way more common for female characters to be defined by their love interests in mainstream media. That's rarely the case for male characters. So maybe by depicting romance-driven male characters and something-else-driven female characters, fanfic is just reflecting our wishes for something different.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-04 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I like female characters
There are some femslash ships that I see as entirely plausible and which have good chemistry
I am not attracted to women and therefore to not read or reblog femslash art and fic.

End of story.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-05 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
So for you shipping is all about being sexually attracted to at least one of the characters?
Ooook.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-05 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
da

that's....not unreasonable at all.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-05 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yes? I'm not AYRT, but I have a hard time shipping when I don't find at least one character attractive. Generally my ships are "dude I'm attracted to" plus "someone who'd go nicely with him." Almost all my ships are m/m or f/m as a result.

+1

I'm surprised you make it sound unusual. There are million of stories to read and watch, so it takes something more than interest in canon to want to read every fic that's around a fandom.

I hardly ever read a fic that wasn't about one of the very few favorite characters I like (as characters and because I find them attractive).

(Anonymous) 2013-09-05 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
da
maybe I'm doing it wrong but I find fics that don't have at least one of my favorite characters as a main character very boring
this works for pwp smut as well

Might have something to do with how shitty female characters get treated in shows, movies and books.

I can find two female characters I like in most of the things I watch, but it's not often that they are compatible relationship wise.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-05 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd buy that if it weren't for the loads of incompatible male characters getting shipped all over the place.

Not a comment on your own opinion, just the general idea that female characters having no chemistry leads to no shipping.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-04 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
da

But wouldn't it be less about the "vast fictional realm" and more the specific fandom they're in at the time?

i.e Pacific Rim is awesome and I want to ship the shit. However, there's two female characters - one of whom is married and I ship the shit out of that canon couple. I hate OC's so Mako Mori is not going with a nameless anyone.
Granted the obvious conclusion is for her to peg the shit out of Raleigh hnnnn
or my other fandom where the cast is majorly male, of the 5girls, one is a child (aaaah no shipping no!) three are sisters and incest is a squick of mine so again the shipping f/f choices are limited

So yeah, sometimes there are not enough girls in a fandom the person is in to ship. Hardly their(our?) fault that the original sources is lacking.

tl;dr your "I wonder about them" comment is stupid.

I just wish people who don't femslash could leave it at "I'm not into it" instead of making excuses about how all female characters suck, and how they'd totally ship them if they were better written.

Well done tramping all over the characters femslashers adore in order to get to that rationale.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-04 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. But you really should have put this somewhere relevant since OP didn't say they don't like female characters and didn't trample over anything.

Liking female characters and shipping them in lesbian relationships are vastly different things.

I like a lot of female characters. I might even passively ship them. But I'm not shipping them enough to actively read fanfic.
