Yeah but method of suicide isn't logical, it's emotional.

[personal profile] dreemyweird 2013-09-06 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, no. Some people plan suicides very thoroughly (many people, actually) so that the method works, their body looks okay-ish, their relatives find them fast (or do not find them) et c.

I can totally see how for certain characters it would be OOC not to plan their suicide out.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-06 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
That's not true across the board by any means. There are the people who do it rashly, and there are the people who plan for a long, long time, down to the tiniest detail.

Agreed. Not to mention that men tend to use on average more violent methods of suicide (guns, car crashes etc.) anyway.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-06 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
i can't see Dean doing it any way but the hunter version of suicide by cop

just keep going after things too big for him untill something takes him down

(Anonymous) 2013-09-06 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
This. I wouldn't be surprised if at different points in the series he was unconsciously (and occasionally consciously) doing just that. One of his biggest underlying issues is his need to save people; he'd find a way to end things that would be of use to someone else. Or at least what he'd consider to be of use. Hell, the two times he tried to commit suicide in canon were both along these lines: his suicide deal in S2 allowed him to save Sam's life and then when he tried to commit suicide by Michael in S5 it was because he thought that was the best way to save as many people as possible.

I see Dean setting up an elaborate Rube Goldberg type deal where he not only shoots himself in the head but somehow burns his body, including his bones, so he doesn't come back as a ghost.

...It worries me how much I like this idea.
starphotographs: I like him. He kind of looks and acts like one of my characters. (I did not know this when I started liking him!) (Victor (...>:|))

Yeah, that's the pretty much only method that I'm... Just not gonna touch for any reason ever. As a reader or a writer. It's cliched and inefficient and just pisses me off for some hazy reason.

Still doesn't mean you'd have the mental strength to pull a trigger at that point. In most cases, I'd just find taking an overdose of sleeping pills more realistic. Most people want to go gently.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. When I've been emotional and feeling he urge to do something to myself because of my pain....I would still never choose something so violent.
I've heard that there a lot of suicide victims who deep down want to live...but are just trying to escape a painful situation.

So I can buy someone not reaching for a gun. Honestly I could see guns as the LAST resort. Just because someone has access to a weapon doesn't mean they're most likely to use it.

Actually, a quick google will tell you that half of all US suicides are by firearms, and if you break that down by gender more like three quarters of all male suicides are by firearms. I suspect that if you went further and broke THAT down by age, you'd find that most adult males kill themselves with guns.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-06 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait I'm confused. Is cutting wrists actually a means of suicide? I thought it was more self-harm, and I know there's big veins there but if you want to die it seems like it'd take a while to bleed out...

(Anonymous) 2013-09-06 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
there's arteries running through there so it can be done

it's easy to muck it up though because the veins and shit are kinda under the tendons and shit afaik and most people will go across the road instead of down the stream

(Anonymous) 2013-09-06 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
The problem is that most people go across their wrists, you're mostly hitting capillaries. Elbow to wrist along the vein is more effective.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-06 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
If you cut deep and up from wrist to elbow you'd bleed out fairly quickly. There are faster ways, but people certainly kill themselves that way.

My mother told me the ancient Romans committed suicide by cutting their wrists and then sticking their arms in bowls of hot water. Hot water makes the blood flow out faster so they died more quickly.

Maybe they know what happens if you fuck up suicide by gun.

(it's basically the most horrifying thing outside attempted suicide by jumping off a tall height/getting hit by a train)

Wrists are less likely to leave you incredibly regretting your failed attempt.

warning for suicide

[Picture is a car's trunk/boot open, showing tons of different guns and weapons.]

I can't take your Winchester suicide-attempt fic seriously if Plan A involves cutting his wrists. They're grown adults who handle firearms every day.

Wow, so wrist-cutting is childish?

It's not a "grown up" method so much as it is a male/American method. There are more lethal methods out there. Which means you're probably right, it is probably the method the Winchesters would use, being both of those things. But not because they're "adults".

But like so much else writers project their own experiences and feelings on to their characters; most of those writers are young women; wrist cutting is an extremely common form of suicide (attempt?) among young women. You can see echoes of this in the comments above, where "people want to die like ____" statements are made. But by "people", they mean "people in my demographic who think like I do". It shouldn't be surprising; (older) male authors project their own feelings and lived experiences onto their (younger) female characters allllll theeee tiiiiime.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
I know at least one otherwise very competent medical student who failed suicide with paracetamol. So.

Depends on rest of the fic. Are they really resolved to die?

I don't really know the fandom but I'm confused - you're saying adults never slit their wrists?
