I wish they'd stop doing the opposite, too. You are not a gay rights advocate because you like yaoi. You are not fighting the system by fap to femslash. gtfo

+1 nothing irks me more than fans thinking that by have their ship becime canon, they are helping the lgbt community

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
but all of those stupid shows are just "queerbaiting" people and if the ships don't become canon then gay marriage will never be accepted!!!!!!!!!!!1!!!

Sure, but on the other hand we should probably be careful about not backlashing the baby out with the bath water.

I can think of a few shows that could probably stand to do their bit for LGBT culture by coming the hell out of the closet. (Rizzoli and Isles, for instance? Is anybody buying that that's not a show about a lesbian couple that's tragically been put through a half-arsed Google Translate to heterosexuality.) Slacktivist slashers (slashtivists? idk) have bollocks priorities, but they aren't always wrong about the queerbaity thing.

And alternatively, you're not antifeminist if prefer you enjoy slash over het of femslash.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-08 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, not necessarily, but there are definitely some mysogynistic behaviors that pop up with startling regularity in slash-only fans. It's not an instant conviction, but it is a warning sign.

Secret 7 - Shipping

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-09-07 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is yellow text over red background and black and red text over white background.]

HOLD. DO NOT SHIP. BY DATE: I wish people would stop taking what I ship or don't ship as fucking political statements.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Amen.

Just because I ship a het couple doesn't mean I oppose LGBT rights.

Just because I ship a slash couple doesn't mean I am an ambassador for LGBT rights.

PLEASE STOP.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I personally can't stand people who thinks that their ships shows just how progressive they are.

Newsflash, just because you only ship het doesn't mean you're not misogynistic.

I've...never actually seen that. I'm not saying it's never happened, but I just haven't.

Mostly I've seen that if you ship het, you're automatically tagged as homophobic or don't support LGBT rights.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
da

It's really a bunch of things coming from all sides, like everyone's making these snap judgements about everyone. To some people that ship slash, someone who ships het is homophobic; to some people that ship het, someone who ships slash is misogynistic or fetishizing queerness; to some people that ship femslash, someone who ships anything but is lesbophobic; it goes on and on. It's really juvenile.

That said, my assumption is that most people fall into the "ships a little bit of everything and doesn't get embroiled in the bullshit" category, but as is always the case, it's the fringe elements that always end up screaming the loudest.

Agreed.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Was I the only one who didn't read this correctly and thought OP was mad about people taking their ships away from them at first?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
YANA

I really wasn't sure what the secret was trying to say the first two times I read it. I kept reading the by and date parts into it.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
No, you're absolutely not the only one.

THIS^^

What I ship has more to do with characters and character interactions I find interesting, and says very little about me as a person.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2013-09-07 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It depends, are you shipping Barack Obama and Richard Nixon?

[identity profile] mimi-sardinia.livejournal.com 2013-09-07 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, well while becoming a slasher made me more sympathetic to gay people, I do know for a fact that I am a straight woman, and only have the vaguest understanding of LGBT issues.

Also? My kinks* are not indicative of my RL thoughts.

(I am not calling slash a kink. Incest is a kink though.)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree that one's ships alone are not indicative of his/her political/social views, but combined with other things that person says? They can be. Like the person whose profile I saw that said they only shipped het because slash was amoral and against all decency (but in nastier terms than that). Or the person who ships only slash and feels the need to bash every female character because they might get in the way of their ships. And I've seen enough of both of those types of people in fandom that I am often wary when I see someone who only ships slash or het.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-08 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
So how about people who only ship their OTP, period? They kind of wind up shipping just one or the other by default.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-08 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT

If someone only ships one ship, and I didn't see anything else from them (like the one ship is Spock/Uhura and they rant about how they can't believe anyone would make Spock gay because it is so unnatural, or the one ship is Spock/Kirk and they bash Uhura because she isn't worthy of Spock) then I wouldn't make any assumptions. One ship is too small of a data sample to draw any conclusions.

I'm talking about the people I've seen with a dozen "main" ships and they are all white males (despite there being females and PoC on said shows), or people of that nature.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-08 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
THIS.

One of my favorite fanartists ever drew the most touching, poignant, heartwrenching fan comics of my favorite slash pairings, but she had genderbent one of them. It was done really well and in a tasteful way (more about power dynamics and gender politics than P goes into V), and the unrequited romance thing was more in the periphery, but she got flamed to shit all over the place. She stopped drawing fanart for them because people accused her of being homophobic. And it *killed* me, because I loved her stuff and I was so sad to see her take most of it down :(

(Anonymous) 2013-09-08 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I think I know who you're talking about. I liked her art and I liked her even more after I saw she didn't let herself get baited by trolls. Classy lady, IMO. I didn't even know the drama got to her until I saw she took down her stuff.

...this description remind me so much of a genderbent Naruto fancomic I love that I had to go check to make sure that this hadn't happened to the fanartist while I wasn't looking. People are so stupid sometimes.
