Not the OP, but I always thought he was older because he was smarter. Alvin seemed like the bratty little sibling to me (and I say that as the bratty little sibling of my family).

I don't think it ever occurred to me that they might be triplets.

Simon's age role has changed over various generations. In the 60s cartoons, he was the oldest of his brothers, while in the 80's cartoons he was the middle child, as revealed in the episode Grounded Chipmunk when Alvin states he has never been alone, except those five minutes before Simon was born. In the CGI films his age is unknown

Alvin is the oldest of his brothers (it was revealed in the episode "Grounded Chipmunk" when he made the statement "I've never been alone, except those five minutes before Simon was born").

You could also argue Simon acts like a typical middle sibling - putting up with an older sibling that always gets his way while dealing with a younger sibling that is the baby of the family. Also - he fits that trope of younger sibling genius.

Huh. I must have seen the episode mentioned upthread, because Alvin's always been the oldest to me. I'm kinda baffled that everyone else thought it was Simon. As a kid I thought it was really neat that the oldest was a brat and the middle child the responsible "big brother" type for a change.

That's because that's not Simon, it's Simon's evil CGI doppleganger, a first step toward the development of the even more evil CGI Smurfs. Just add water and feed after midnight, and they'll be devouring human bodies from the inside.

I always related to him the most growing up, and I'm the middle child, so I always assumed he was the middle child. And my older sister was Alvin's soul mate through and through. So it feels right to me, no matter what "canon" is.
