The stupidest thing? Carlos isn't even explicitly described as dark-skinned. I listened to the episode in question the other day, and the line is "dark, delicate-skinned Carlos". His skin is delicate, and he as a whole is dark. A word which when applied to a person can mean a whole range of things, up to and including a light-skinned person with dark hair. =_______=;; tl;dr sjws

REALLY? What episode is it in? I want to hear this for myself. Because so many people quote it as "dark skinned".

I believe it's 16. Give me a minute and I can check.

e: It is 16, and I'm sorry, I misquoted slightly. In the interest of accuracy, the line is "Carlos, the dark, delicate-skinned scientist".

Hah. Hell, dark could be based on his attitude, how he acts, the fact no one knows about him, his hair, his eyes, OR his skin color. But of course it must be skin color and dark must mean at least #785C50. I wonder how light skinned Hispanics feel when they see that Carlos of their skin color is consider white.

That honestly sounds like reaching, for a lack of a better word, to complain about people, but thanks to Cecil's love of flowery language, it's just confusing.

It's a lot to base yelling at people over their headcanons for, though.

I got no problem with any depictions of carlos (though we do know his hair color) but I also stay away from the non-art parts of the fandom.

I picture him as hispanic because his name is Carlos and he's in the southwest US, so... yeah. That's a place you'd tan.

I mean acting like it's capital-c Canon is dumb but that's probably what they meant by dark in that sentence.

Oh yeah, I see him as dark-skinned and Hispanic too. That's not a problem. A problem is when you start calling people racist because their headcanon isn't the same as yours.

I picture him as the grown up version of Carlos from The Magic Schoolbus.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-09 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
That really is a delightful thought.

He's probably too "white" for the tumblr activists though

(Anonymous) 2013-09-08 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Hell, he's never even explicitly described as Hispanic. The people insisting he can't be white are doing so based only on his name.

Thank you - that's what I was remembering, but was too afraid to ask. "Dark" as a general descriptor is pretty ambiguous and I've seen it used to mean dark skin or just dark hair and eyes.

I've seen a lot of the SJW-types citing the creators stating somewhere that Carlos is a POC. If it's true, it gives them a little more credibility.

Still, I'm so tired of the rage.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-08 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I think those people are referring to this:

It was interesting how everyone was drawing Carlos as white until the first person put it together that someone named Carlos who was living in the Southwest probably wasn't and drew him that way. Then it shifted and I haven't seen a white version of Carlos since. - Joseph Fink (maxnmona)

http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3493679&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=14

Which is ambiguous wording, but I think you could argue that "put it together" = "got it right."

It didn't even occur to me that the name "Carlos" might be a hint about ethnicity. It just registers as "general name" to me.

That still leaves a pretty wide range for skin tones, though, so it's still a pretty stupid thing for people to get up in arms about.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-09 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
da

Same, Carlos is...such a general name it didn't even register it's meant to be ethnic-specific.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-08 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It may not strictly be canon that Carlos is a POC but I think making him white is by far more worthy of the side-eye than defaulting Cecil to white.
