On the one hand: I totally feel you. I have this whole big series outlined, but the first two installments got like five reviews each, which considering the amount of time I put into them is extremely depressing. :(

BUT...on the other hand, I once wrote a fic for which there was essentially no fandom, which got about 20 PAGEVIEWS, never mind reviews, but the one review I got was something like "I've been waiting 30 years to read this fic about these characters. Thank you." which, frankly, made it seem pretty worth it.

That would be an awesome review to get. Yes, I mostly write for myself, but it's so nice when someone actually says thanks.

I feel you, OP. Mine was Nephry from Tales of the Abyss. I had this huuuuuge fic planned out for her, one that didn't just use her as a relationship point for Peony, exploring her relationships with everyone else and with herself and the direction her life took, but I ended up shying away from doing it because I was getting a lot of side-eyeing from people for caring so much about such a minor character. I wish I hadn't been affected by it.

OMG. I wish I had a Dreamwidth so that I didn't have to comment anon on this, but PLEASE WRITE THIS. Or at least consider writing it because holy shit, that sounds every kind of awesome and I can't believe people were side-eyeing you for that (for shame, Abyss fandom! for shame!)!
I love Nephry so much, and while I do ship Peony/Nephry really hard, I'm always happy to read any fic about her, and this sounds so FASCINATING!
*desperately hopes you will see this comment*

I've done that and it was totally worth it. When one actually writes it for oneself, any praise and interest is like surprise jackpot (two reviews in four years: YAY!!!). Besides, I read it from time to time myself and am still immensely satisfied with it.

So DO IT!

I feel you too. It's disheartening to spend a lot of time and effort on something hardly anyone is interested in. But, on the other side, you might enjoy the experience of writing it anyway?

Write it. Not a lot of people might read it, but those that might really appreciate it. My favorite minor, minor character is Rin from Naruto. I love fics about her and appreciate the ones I can find.

Do it, anon! The first time I wrote minor character fic, it got a lot of feedback, probably because there just wasn't anything else out there about the character and ship. :)

Meh, I like it when my writing is appreciated. Sure, I write because I want to, but feedback sort of keep you going...

Me too. And then I write for a smaller fandom. I'm probably an idiot. :P That said feedback does keep you going sometimes.

I can't lie, I would love for more of my fics to get more attention and yes, it can be a lot easier to get motivated when you feel like what you're writing will appeal to a lot of people. But still I have always found it rewarding to write whatever characters/pairings inspire me the most no matter how unpopular they may be. And you never know when your interpretation could get a very grateful following, even if it's a relatively small amount of people.

write a bunch of pandering fic to the popular pairing of choice in that fandom (this is important: make sure your penname/username is super easy to remember and is not easily confused with other people's)

once you get followers, write the one with the minor character

it won't get as many views, but if people recognize your name, it will get more than if you're an unknown

...that is actually sound advice. Manipulative, but sound.

Secret 7 - Fanfiction

[Picture is red, orange, green text on a white blank background.]

Not secret: I want to write an epic-length fic about a minor female character.

Secret: I don't think I have the self-discipline to put so much effort and energy into something hardly anyone will read. I feel like a hypocrite because I've always said that I write for myself. I feel like people will only be interested in the side slash pairing.

Bonus secret: I really want to be recognized in this fandom.

Colours related.

Hey, you never know who might appreciate it. I tend to latch on to minor female characters like a lamprey; I can probably name one in most fandoms I have that I'm always looking for fic about, or I'm trying to write fic about. We can't be as alone in that as you might think. But I completely understand wanting to balance doing fic you like with doing fic that gets a respectable amount of attention.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-09 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
So what fandom do these "colours" refer to?

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-09-10 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
It's quite a tenuous link. In hindsight, I don't know why I mentioned it.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-10 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I wrote a fic crossing two fandoms, both with sparse amounts of existing fic. It doesn't get the views or kudos of the things I write that have built in audiences, but it's my favorite thing I've written and when someone finds it and likes it, it totally makes my day.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-10 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
I wrote something like this once! I didn't finish it because I'm bad at finishing things but I had it all planned out. It was for an extremely minor character and it actually got a fair amount of reviews. I say go for it! You never know, it might be just the thing people are looking for!

just do it

(Anonymous) 2013-09-10 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
In my own experience, it has always been worth it. Don't think, start writing. After that you'll know soon enough whether it's worth it or not. Or at least that's what I think.
