Why not judge whoever made the dagger for spelling it wrong compared to the original story?

MTE

I don't write fic, but every time I discussed him when I was watching the show, I wrote his name as it was in the fairy tale.

That's exactly what I do.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-12 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
In the original story he's Rumpelstilzchen.

so late to this party, but this

I didn't go 30k into debt studying folk and fairy tales to write dumb misspellings when transcribing my sweaty mansex

...half-bitter, half-buttfurious about this issue 5ever

Hmm. I honestly just did it the way that Microsoft Word autocorrected me. Now it's going to bother me and I want to change it in my fics.

Secret 2 - Once Upon a Time

[Picture is a dagger with the name "Rumplestiltskin" on its wavy blade, from the TV show "Once Upon a Time".]

I get incredibly annoyed at how often people misspell Rumplestiltskin's name. I know it's spelled Rumpelstiltskin in the original tale, but c'mon guys. It's right there on the dagger.

I totally judge fanfic authors who make this mistake. You can't even spell the character's name right? Really? [displeased face emoticon]

I judge the hell out of whoever made the error on the dagger. I get that the show is about putting a new twist on the tales, but changing the spelling of a main character's name should not be one of those twists.

Error dagger aside, that's why I call him Rumples. Easier to spell.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-13 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
XD I call him Rum half the time (the other half is Gold Rum) but my friend refers to him as Rumples.

Shhhhh There is no movie in Ba Sing Se

(Anonymous) 2013-09-13 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
yeah well

Betelgeuse's name is spelled like this, even though the movie is called Beetlejuice

(Anonymous) 2013-09-13 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
That was the joke, his name IS spelled Betelgeuse but no one pronounced it right. Hence charade-ing out "beetle" and "juice".

personally I liked Beetlebreakfast the best.

I agree with you.

I mean, regardless of the actual myth or story, the show is different. See also: Herakles (or Heracles) vs Hercules.

Whoops.
I guess my googling how to spell it correctly also lead me astray.
Srsly though, why did they change it???

(Anonymous) 2013-09-13 12:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a policy. If a name is over six letters, I don't judge people when they get it wrong, especially if it's an old name with the possibility of variants, because way back when we didn't have spell check. Correct spelling has only been a thing for the last hundred or so years.

Personally, the only spelling I can't seem to be able to stand is when people fuck up "vicious." "Viscous" is a different word entirely, folks.
