The student part always got to me to. I can't see Spock dating a student under any circumstance. It would be very against his character to do so. If she hadn't been his student, I could see Uhura/Spock more clearly. There's just too much non-Spock in the relationship for me to see it. (Of course, I can blame that on my love for TOS Spock as well, but still. Something seems off to me.)

honestly I don't get people who make comparisons with tos and expect the characters be the same well knowing it's literally another universe and another story.
I mean, Guinevere wasn't a black girl in the original tale and Merlin was so old that he could been Aurthur's grandpa. surely not a teenage boy. Elementary changed the sex and ethnicity of Dr Watson turning him into Lucy Liu. Disney made canon a relationship between the real Pocahontas and John Smith that historically could have never happened because she was just a little girl when she met him. They gave a happy end to the little mermaid even though Andersen had wanted her to die in the end (and it really was a story about unrequited love). Nolan had created a relationship between Bruce and Rachel whose character didn't even exist in canon.
Don't even let me start about 90% of the movie adaptations of "The Count of Monte Cristo" where he ends up with Mercedes even though in the real story he stayed with princess Haydée instead.

At least Abrams&co created their own alternate reality.

My problem with AOS is the fact that the characters have changed SO MUCH. And that the plotlines don't reference back to what Star Trek stood for in the first place (equality, space travel, not destroying civilizations in their youth or at least realizing the cost of what they did, more than just lens flare).

Also, people argue about all the things you just said. Just because Abrams and co created their own alternate reality doesn't mean that they can't treat women in better in this history or make a movie that isn't almost exactly like the first one or white wash. I still like the movies for what they are (action flick), but they have major problems.

IAWTC. Especially since he seems aware of the impropriety in the first film, when he transfers her to a different ship to avoid the appearance of partiality (and then gives in when she pushes him - good job on the impartiality, there, dude).

THIS SO MUCH. Like what? I get that this Spock is more in touch with his human side, but that was like a 360 turn in a span of seconds. It's not like the impropriety goes away, just because they're on a bigger ship (in fact then he is above her in rank as well, so I doubt that would be looked upon with a smile in a military like setting). She should have never been his student in the first place. It just doesn't make sense.

You know, I really hate the fact that they addressed lots if issues from the movies in comics because not everybody reads them at all (and they are not that good to recommend, really), but this was in the comics too: it was set up like Uhura made her move on Spock after she finished his class. Maybe it'll help you a little :)
It definitely doesn't help me, but then I was a person who didn't get they we dating from reassigning to the Enterprise scene %))

If a movie or tv show has a comic spinoff I generally don't think of them as canon. It can expand on what we've seen, but showing is telling, and if they don't get it convey the basics in the movie/show itself, the director/writer failed.

But thanks for telling me that they comics make their relationship a bit better :)

Yeah, I agree. If some important point is not clear from a movie/TV show/original book, that's authors' fail. I sometimes have a feeling about these new Star Trek comics that writers checked Internet on what people found most confusing and then tried to make it clear in comics. Which is sometimes nice for slow ones in the audience (me, for example) but still a big fail on the movie part.
At least these comics are considered canon from authors' point of view (unlike tons of older Star Trek comics, novels etc.) which means, I hope, that we won't get any contradictory information.
