I really dislike beggars on Tumblr. Especially ones who are like, EVERYONE NEEDS TO REBLOG THIS! IF YOU DON'T REBLOG THIS YOU ARE __________.

No.

I don't mind if they are doing a service like, "I'm a little short on rent this month so I've opened drawing/writing/crafting/whatever commission." It makes it less begging and more, "Quick, I need a job. Hire me, please!"

But out and out, "Hey, I need money. Gimmee." Yeah. You and about everyone else on tumblr, pal.

Oh yeah, I don't mind people doing commissions and such. But those people who are just like, "I need money! Please donate for no reason!" are the ones who annoy me.

This, I really hate people who've come to beg their followers for money to pay for rent or to fund their cosplay and go to conventions.

Donate for no reason and further exhort your friends on my behalf even though they don't even know me!

Uhg.

I really don't understand this mindset. It's one thing to need some extra cash for a short time in an emergency (i.e. for a month or two after losing a job or something). But this new attitude I've been seeing with people just asking for money at random from their followers...what? Why do you think this is okay? Do these people ask their offline friends for money this way?

It's one thing if you plan to give back somehow (i.e. promising fanart to anyone who chips in for a new laptop on your behalf, something I've seen before). Hell, not too long ago, even when people were in an emergency, they usually tried to make arrangements retroactively to pay people back somehow or give them something back (fanfic, fanart, tutorials, etc). But this weird new thing of people just asking for money, not being in a real emergency, and not really seeming to give anything back...it's kind of creeping me out, actually.

While Tumblr has been fantastic for many things, it's also created this weird culture of encouraging dysfunctionality and dependency, and I'm extremely worried that people getting money from followers without giving back or anything is the first step towards something even worse.

I have to agree with you on that. I'm all for people... I dunno, at least doing some sort of exchange, to at least show that they have some appreciation of the fact that their followers are giving them money.

Hell, I might even be a bit more understanding if it was a once-in-a-blue-moon thing where people were asking for money because it was a dire situation. But I see more and more where people feel okay just putting up a donate button on their Tumblr and honestly thinking people will give them their hard-earned money for no reason.

I'm generous, but I don't arbitrarily support strangers.

I'm awfully frustrated over them too, some of them are for the most minor shit caused by their own problems.

I only donated to...two I can think of.
$30 to a rape victim's legal fight (well, I think it was more to their food/rent while fighting)
and $15 to emergency pet surgery
- both times I made sure they were through official...?help? awareness raising sites, so I got a receipt and everything and not to some furry's paypal account because they keep commissioning $500 artwork then falling short on rent.

some people need to work out priorities. i'm all for buying things that make you happy to get through life, but not if you're making yourself miserable/worse off through your fun things.

Yeah, I dislike this as well. And I see it all over the fucking place on Tumblr. Man up and get a job just like the rest of us.

Jobs don't grow on trees any more than money does, you oblivious twit.

THIS. Especially in this economy. We are all disposable now.
