I don't mind if they are doing a service like, "I'm a little short on rent this month so I've opened drawing/writing/crafting/whatever commission." It makes it less begging and more, "Quick, I need a job. Hire me, please!"

But out and out, "Hey, I need money. Gimmee." Yeah. You and about everyone else on tumblr, pal.

I'm awfully frustrated over them too, some of them are for the most minor shit caused by their own problems.

I only donated to...two I can think of.
$30 to a rape victim's legal fight (well, I think it was more to their food/rent while fighting)
and $15 to emergency pet surgery
- both times I made sure they were through official...?help? awareness raising sites, so I got a receipt and everything and not to some furry's paypal account because they keep commissioning $500 artwork then falling short on rent.

some people need to work out priorities. i'm all for buying things that make you happy to get through life, but not if you're making yourself miserable/worse off through your fun things.

"I hate privileged people who don't understand what it's like to be poor." I see it all the time from some friends. This isn't even on tumblr, but Facebook. There are legitimate issues with how people treat others, and crap like this takes away from what could be meaningful dialogue.

There seems to be a mentality on the internet that nobody can ever be poor because they misused their money, and if you dare suggest that you're the worst person ever.

I'm NOT saying every poor person is in that situation because they spent all their money on anime material. If anything, people like OP's friend are in the minority. But nobody owes someone money if they're just going to use it on the wrong things over and over again.

I used to live with someone who did this and it really pissed me off. She didn't have a job and spent the money she did get from her parents each month on movies. When it came time to pay the rent every month, she'd try to get us to cover her or she'd beg people on LJ and Tumblr. One month, I was hospitalized and she used my illness as the reason she was begging. She said we needed money to help pay for my medications. She got a lot of donations, and I don't know what she used the money for because she didn't have rent money that month either. That was when I knew I had to move out. If I were a braver person, I'd have said something to the people who donated to her. Instead, I just keep making graphics or crocheting things for them as "gifts," which is really the best I can do to pay them each back.

So I really feel this secret.

I have a friend like this. She'll borrow money but never return it, and then when her paycheque comes in she'll spend it on purses. She owns dozens and dozens of purses.

I've stopped lending her money.

Secret 1 - Fandom friendship

Dear fandom friend: No, I will not chip in to help you pay your rent. You have done several times in the few years I've known you, begging your tumblr followers for help and trying to make it a classist and social justice issue.

The reason you can't pay rent is because you spent $300 on the anime figurines you gushed about to me last week and I will never give you another cent. Grow up.

But the riley I mentioned above once actually made a post about how it's okay for (minorities) to lie about what they need donations for. Why they still have people giving to them is beyond me. (bet that's where most of the Arkh money went too in that case)

There's been more than once when I've been on Tumblr and people have been like "So, I'm moving and need help paying rent blah blah blah" and all I can think is "You know this is something that happens every month, right? Are you going to ask for money every month? Maybe you should... not move until you have a job or something."

I have two friends like this IRL. One of them can't keep a job because she has such horrible people skills. The other doesn't want to keep a job because it'll keep her from her dream career.

IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO EAT, STOP COMPLAINING AND ATTEMPT TO FIND ANY JOB THAT WILL HIRE YOU.

Retail's not my dream career, either, but it helps to pay the bills.

This is my brother. He's somehow conned my mom and aunt into buying him groceries because he doesn't have money for them and has to feed himself and his son, but yet he still has money for cable (including HBO and Showtime) and cigarettes and beer. I've even had to send diapers to his baby mama because he doesn't have enough money for that (and she's in school). It drives me up the wall but everyone keeps enabling him.

Bleh, I hate these people. I'm always wary even of the ones who treat it as a one-off thing - do they really have a dog whose vet bills are really $800? How did I know you didn't blow your money on fandom crap and are just looking for the internet to cover your ass when suddenly rent/bills are due? So someone is vouching for you but are they in on it or?

My other paranoia is donating to one such person and inadvertently enabling them. Maybe it's meant to be a one-off, but they come back to rely on the internet again and again for their income realizing that this can actually be done.

Or maybe I'm just not trustful of people. I'm unlikely to donate unless it's a good friend, but I've bought a commission. I don't have much money myself, so...

I know a woman (over 25) whose father pays for her phone and who is constantly whining about not being able to afford to afford to take a credentialing exam so she could earn more than minimum wage ... but she fucking flies into ComiCon every year.

The mind, it reels. PEOPLE SHOULD SET BETTER PRIORITIES.
