Get a second job (or get a job in the first place!)

Annnd this is where privileged does, sort of, step in and color things. It's not that simple for everyone. Some people are idiots and turn down jobs they've been offered and have made their own beds. However, a lot of us *don't* - we just don't get offers to begin with for whatever reason.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but if you're living in an apartment by yourself and you don't have a job, that's not a privilege issue, that's a stupidity issue. Lots of people don't have jobs, and they make do by losing the luxury of their own apartment. It happens.

A place to live isn't a fucking luxury.

Living on your own in this economy, without a fucking job? Yes it is.

(frozen comment)

Only because of people like you, sweetie.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
Oh ho, this should be interesting. What kind of person do you think I am, exactly?

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
A troll. Or an idiot. Not sure which because you're doing awfully great at being both.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT - Why do you say that. Anon speaks only the truth. You may need to share living quarters with family or friends or roomies if you can't afford a place of your own.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
And according to them if you can't find a roommate and have no friends or family to move in with, you deserve to be out on the street because you're poor so fuck you.

So yes, troll or idiot. Possibly both.

I'm going to play devil's advocate here: if a person's parents kicked them out, or in general aren't very supportive of their child, and their friends aren't in any position to really be able to help them, then the situation becomes complicated.

Not if it's the only option available to you. Which it is for many people who don't have parents or friends they can move in with, and can't find a roommate who isn't a drug dealer.

(frozen comment)

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2013-09-14 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
Um. I live in a city with horrific drug crime rates, right outside a city who is known as the methiest city of my state and I've managed to find roommates who are not drug dealers or even users more than once. I'm not going to say I am one hundred percent sure your scenario is an impossible one but it's pretty damn unlikely.

Yes, searching for and living with roommates is not fun, blows, and can be nerve-wracking finding and sharing living quarters with strangers but it doesn't make you under-privileged if you have to. Sure it's all kinds of unfair that someone might have to put in a lot of extra work to end up with something other than their ideal living situation but sucking it up, making sacrifices, and being financially responsible is just a thing some people have to do. Having a private living space is not an unalienable right.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
If you can afford to be picky enough to screen roommates at all, you're not in as bad shape financially as you think.

(frozen comment)

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2013-09-14 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
I am so confused as to what you are trying to say? People can be so poor they can't afford to screen roommates and that explains why they don't have roommates and ask other people to cover their rent continuously? Can't they screen roommates while borrowing money off other people until they find a safe roommate?

(frozen comment) TW: Rape

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, people can be that poor. I was one of them. When your boss cuts your hours by almost 30% and you're told "rent in two weeks or you're out on the street," you don't have time to screen roommates. And I didn't have anyone I could borrow from. I ended up with a roommate whom I found out the hard way was a drug-pusher and convicted rapist.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
Not a troll, sorry. If you cannot afford your own apartment, you don't get your own apartment, and I don't care what the excuse is. Same goes for cars, pets, expensive food, et fucking cetera. You can make due on limited income by cutting luxuries just like the rest of us.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, sorry. Only a troll or an idiot would say "tough shit" to the disabled.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
OK, so who is supposed to pay this disabled person's rent or mortgage? What kind of accomodations do they deserve? A one bedroom or a loft? A 3 bedroom with a pool? What? If they are on disability sharing an apartment can get a better deal.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
If you cannot work due to a disability, that's what SSI insurance is for. And depending on the disability (especially in the case of certain mental illnesses), sharing an apartment may not be an option.

Not only that, but you're talking like roommates who won't screw you over are easy to find. They really aren't. Taking on a roommate is a hell of a risk, legally, financially, and safety-wise depending on the crowd they run with (and if you're broke, you wouldn't be able to afford being all that picky). You may very well end up worse off.

I think the difference here would be are you then begging for money on the internet to pay your living expenses or are you capable of providing for yourself? As long as you are financially secure enough for whatever reason that you can support your solitary living arrangement, then that's fine. When you're having to beg others for money, that's when it becomes necessary to consider you might be living beyond your means.
