Now I am dying to know how she/he turned this into a social/class issue. Anyone else?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-13 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"I hate privileged people who don't understand what it's like to be poor." I see it all the time from some friends. This isn't even on tumblr, but Facebook. There are legitimate issues with how people treat others, and crap like this takes away from what could be meaningful dialogue.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-13 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't blame privileged people for not understanding what it's like to be poor. I don't understand what it's like to be a man or gay, not really. Everything I do or say is going to be informed by my experience as a straight woman.

I DO blame privileged people when they treat poor people like shit.

Yeah, but not giving to crazy bloggers doesn't qualify.

Oh, absolutely. It was more of a general point.

But, yeah, I actually don't understand how anyone gives money to people they've never even met :/ It's kind of reassuring about the human race, actually- that they'll give money to someone 'in need'* whether their need can be verified or not.

*tbh, I don't really get how people have the audacity to ask strangers to pay their rent for them. It's a regular, monthly payment and if you haven't got your finances together, that is your fault (generally speaking- I know shit happens). Get a roommate. Move back in with your parents. Move in with a friend. Get a second job (or get a job in the first place!) Get a more affordable place. There are so many options that aren't 'beg random people on the internet'.

I do understand, however, when people ask for money for urgent medical bills and things like that.

Get a second job (or get a job in the first place!)

Annnd this is where privileged does, sort of, step in and color things. It's not that simple for everyone. Some people are idiots and turn down jobs they've been offered and have made their own beds. However, a lot of us *don't* - we just don't get offers to begin with for whatever reason.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but if you're living in an apartment by yourself and you don't have a job, that's not a privilege issue, that's a stupidity issue. Lots of people don't have jobs, and they make do by losing the luxury of their own apartment. It happens.

tbh, I don't really get how people have the audacity to ask strangers to pay their rent for them. It's a regular, monthly payment and if you haven't got your finances together, that is your fault (generally speaking...

With the best budgeting skills, it would still take some time for a person working a minimum wage job to accumulate that "4 months' worth of expenses" that we're told to lay by as an emergency fund, and if an emergency overtakes them in the meantime--illness or injury, layoff, natural disaster--it could wipe out whatever savings they had. So I can see a basically responsible person suddenly having to ask for help to make rent. Not everybody can go home to live with their folks or find a second job at short notice.

But "I hate privileged people who don't understand what it's like to be poor"--coming from the OP's friend, that sounds disingenuous, because blowing $300 on an impulse purchase seems a lot more like the act of someone who has always been comfortably off and has never had to budget their money.

I think one of the problems is that while there are plenty of people who are in that situation of making minimum wage and having no back-ups, friends, family, safety nets, or other options to turn to...these usually aren't the people you see begging their followers for rent on Tumblr.

Granted, about half of the financial requests I see on Tumblr aren't a problem - they're either real emergencies (pet needs medical care, lost a job and just finished off the savings, etc) that are isolated incidents, and/or they're commission based (i.e. I need a new laptop, chip in and I'll make you fanart as soon as I get it).

But the other half of them are people who need help paying the rent or bills, yet seem to have enough money for things like cosplaying, merch, conventions, etc, and unfortunately the latter group seems to be growing, and at an increasingly rapid pace. I understand that it's not always feasible to just put your life on hold when you are trying to sort through your life circumstances and finances and stuff, but at the same time, priorities - making rent is a hell of a lot more important than a cosplay outfit or going to a convention.

That's true, and I had a roommate like that (so, you know, getting a roommate isn't always the better option). But what you're saying is a far cry from the anon above insisting that if you have money problems, it's almost always your fault. That's classist libertarian bullshit logic and I wish it would die off already.

And this is where I tell you "shut your hole for a second and listen" because not everyone can do that. Not everyone has parents or friends they can move in with. The legal ramifications of roommates can actually screw you over worse. "More affordable places" are very often in dangerous neighborhoods (and it costs money to move). "Getting a (second) job" is not as easy as you make it sound, especially if you have children or are a student.

Generally speaking, shit happens far more than you think, and more often than not people who are in bad financial straits got there through no fault of their own.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
But that is the way of the history of the world. I think today we have been conditioned to expect help (from our parents or the government) that we have no coping skills when things get tough. What did our grandparents do before there were things like welfare and other forms of government aid? What do people in third world countries do? It's hard to imagine and someday, when/if society implodes we may be forced to face some extremely harsh realities.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
Very simple: they got sick and they died.

And no, there is nothing wrong with asking for help when you need it because your boss cut your hours or your company switched to those paycard things whose fees eat up almost 20% of your very tiny paycheck or some other nonsense.

I am sick and fucking tired of people demonizing the poor for being poor. You want someone to blame? Blame the fucking cheapskate employers who pay their workers shit and cut benefits so the company brass can get that $3 million bonus at the end of the year.

Yeah, but that doesn't really apply to asshole tumblr idiots who buy expensive merchandise, then complains that they're too poor to afford rent. They know when the rent is due. They should budget better. If they can afford hundreds of dollars worth of toys, they can afford rent.

AYRT

I wasn't saying privileged people should treat the poor like shit. I was saying that people use the "nobody understands what it's like" to excuse their mistakes. I know there's people who treat poor people like shit; that has to change. But people making mistakes and then using class issues isn't going to do the trick.

I *had* a friend that once tried to pull that crap on me because my husband and I had just bought a nice TV but when she asked me for rent money, I told her no. We work hard for our paychecks and to pay our bills. I work a job that I hate to make sure we have money. She was always "looking" for a job. She had been offered a couple but she said they weren't her dream job so she didn't want to take them.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I've known a lot of people like this in fandom. There were two BNFs in my main fandom a few years back who hated me and talked a lot of shit about me behind my back because I posted about a vacation my husband and I took and also about some other stuff like new clothes and computers, etc. I was eventually told that I should feel bad for shoving my money in people's faces and give it to them. I will never feel bad about the money my husband and I work hard to earn and have sacrificed to save just so we can take vacations every few years and buy a whole new wardrobe if we need it and replace our computers every few years (which is a necessity at this point for many people).

The kicker is that one of the BNFs buys every gadget that catches her eye and spends a lot of money going to concerts and collecting memorbelia of a bunch of stuff, buys her toddlers designer clothes, lives for free in a house their parents own and can't rent out because she and her family live there, and has bought every expensive kid toy in existence (trampoline, pools, bouncy houses, etc. and she's bought two of almost all of them because she has twins and doesn't believe they should have to share anything).

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Amen to this. I don't ever feel bad about the income that my husband and I make that allow us to have quite a bit of disposable income. We worked hard for it, and we will enjoy it as we feel appropriate.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Some of my friends have tried to make me feel like my parents (who are upper middle class) are bad people solely for having more money. They worked hard for what they have. What's the problem?

I wonder if this isn't a bit of anti-CF bias. I mean, you haven't said you had children at the time, and having spent time reading on the CF communities on LJ, I know some people can be really shitty to couples who don't have children and can channel their money into non-child-related uses.
