Manchild

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Is a deeply gendered word, used against men who fall outside the standard gender norms by not being traditional alpha males, and the people who throw it around are being deeply hypocritical.

Re: Manchild

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a womanchild. So nyah. *sticks tongue out*

Re: Manchild

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Fuck off and die MRA!troll. No-one gives a shit.

Re: Manchild

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Hey...telling people to die is kinda shitty.

Re: Manchild

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 10:20 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed, but MRA's aren't people, so it's fine.

Re: Manchild

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Once you use the phrase "alpha male" in a serious context, no one cares what you have to say. If you're typing, everything changes into MRAMRAMRAMRA. If you're talking, all your words just become a low humming noise, similar to the sound bees make when they're taking a shit.

It's really quite fascinating.

Re: Manchild

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I see it used against people who are being entitled or bratty msyelf. Or that's the implication. There are enough people who throw it around like candy.

Actually the only guys I would call a "manchild" (and I don't use that word a lot as I'm not fond of it) are people who are entitled , people who act like toddlers throwing tantrums *which sometimes include alpha males).

Though there is some hypocrisy with some people who use it. Like I once saw some women who were screeching and complaining about their befriends /SO's "denying them sex" because they were on their period. If I was a braver woman I would have called them out on being "hypocritical womanchildren."

But hey who has the energy to put up with anon deaththreats and "go kill yourselfs" from radicals? Certainly not me.

Yeah, "alpha males" are usually the type of guys that get called "manchild" at least in my experience.

But this:

Like I once saw some women who were screeching and complaining about their befriends /SO's "denying them sex" because they were on their period. If I was a braver woman I would have called them out on being "hypocritical womanchildren."

I don't get. How is complaining that someone doesn't want to have sex with you hypocritical?

AYRT

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
It was the wording and the terms they were using really. "I wish he would have sex with me" versus "I"M BEING DENIED SEX MY HUSBAND IS ABUSING ME BECAUSE HE DOESN'T WANT TO HAVE SEX WHILE I'M ON MY PERIOD"

I would be understanding of the former but the latter and the way it was said. First of all "denying me sex" for 1 week of no sex. "Denying me" just sounds so rapey. I would get it if it were "they never have sex with me" but just one week. Also there was the whole issue of....maybe the guy doesn't feel comfortable with period sex? I mean really having sex while someone's gushing blood I can see how that would be a turnoff. Having experienced it myself. But they were just like "he HAS to have sex with me I want it NOW."

That's well..the kind of attitude that if a man showed regarding a women, expecting her to have sex right then without regard to her comfort, well that would be entitled and rapey. SO I really don't see why it should be any different because a woman is doing it. *shrug*

Re: AYRT

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, ok. I totally get what you mean now, and I agree.

I know a woman whose husband never wants to have sex and seems completely uninterested in sexual things in general (I think he's asexual, personally, but I don't think either of them realizes that's a possibility) and she's constantly whining about how he's denying her sex and he needs to do it whether he wants to or not because it's his "duty" to satisfy her, and yeah, the whole thing comes off as a little creepy and rapey. (Like the time she gave him some sort of pill that was supposed to make him want to have sex--not Viagra but something similar--without him knowing about it because she knew he would never take it willingly.)

Re: AYRT

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Wooow That's really skeevy. If I were him I would consider leaving for that.

Re: AYRT

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Yeah, she...has issues. He has his share too (about other things) but when it comes to sexual stuff she has some pretty fucked up ideas.

Re: Manchild

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you also have problems with words like "mankind" or a bunch of people always being "guys" even when there's only one actual guy amongst a bunch of women?
If not you should get comfortable with the fact that there are a FEW words that use "man" to mean something negative.

Btw, in my language that word doesn't even exist. People just use "woman" or "girly man" :P

Re: Manchild

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
The problem isn't the term.

It's that it only ever gets applied to men.

Re: Manchild

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Complaining that the masculine version of a word is only applied to men might be, like, the funniest thing ever. It's only applied to men because it only applies to me--we have "womanchild" as an equivalent.

Re: Manchild

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Which is literally never used.

(inb4 anecdata, yeah and the arctic monkeys have a song calling a man a slut, doesn't mean it's not a heavily gender insult)

Re: Manchild

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but then you have to take the flipside into account. Women have, for a very long time, been considered feeble/childlike. They need to be taken care of, they aren't 'adult' enough to handle money. They aren't 'mature' enough to handle business, or be president, or act rationally. (That month long PMS that some men seem to think exists) Historically all women are seen as children.

So, manchild is really just a term that tries to other men, because the default is seen as 'mature adult'. Women in general are seen as childish, so there isn't a specific term for that. It's bullshit all around, but that's the culture sadly. (The "are we ready for a female president?" bullshit from last election still irks me)

Nope

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
If I'm calling someone a manchild it has nothing to do with "standard gender norms" or "traditional alpha males". It's because they are a grown man acting like a child. There is absolutely nothing hypocritical about it.

Re: Nope

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
This. "Manchild" doesn't mean girly, it means immature and helpless.

so alpha

wow

Re: Manchild

still nope

Re: Manchild

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
any man who acts in such a manner deserves it, quite frankly. gendered insults towards men are not problematic.

Re: Manchild

(Anonymous) 2013-09-16 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
OIC, you didn't have any luck painting it as an ableist slur, so now you're going for a sexist one.

Go take a shower, get out of the basement, stop expecting your folks to take care of you for life, and go apply for a job, manchild.
