yoga

I've always wanted to get into yoga but have no idea where to start. I'm really bad at learning things on my own, I'm more a person who does well with apprenticeship or classes or the like. The problem is that I'm overweight and out of shape. I've always told myself that a "reward" for a better diet and losing weight would be signing up for a yoga class, but after years and no change (or at least none that stuck - I yoyo weight gain/loss) I'm thinking this reward system might not be the best. But then I'm not sure if I'm ready for a class either - I don't want to be That Fat Girl among the flexible fit folk, you know?

There are some basic moves that you could practice by yourself for starters. The sun salutation (has different variations) is maybe the easiest one you could start with, for example http://www.walgreens.com/hhb/?p=581. Usually these moves are performed in sequence, but you could start by trying out each pose individually. No need to go as far as in the pictures, just stretch to the point where you feel comfortable and try to go a bit further the next time.

I've been to a few yoga classes and, especially beginner classes, often aren't really full of the kind of people you're expecting. It's pretty varied, and yoga is the kind of thing where there won't really be many times in the class where you're at liberty to look around and inspect other people's bodies-- it's supposed to be about focusing on your own body, so if someone is looking at you and judging you they're probably having a shitty time at the class/pretty insecure themselves.

The culture is probably different at different yoga places, though. A lot of them seem to offer trial classes, so you could probably go to a bunch of those at different studios (even if they don't advertise trial classes they might give you one anyway if you just call and ask, and maybe even explain that you're not sure you'll feel comfortable in a class because of your weight. You're probably not the first person to have this concern.)

Good luck! I hope you find something that works out for you!

adding to the comment above, beginner yoga classes are, in my experience, full of different people who just want to try out something new and see if it works for them. Try to find a trial-course somewhere and see how it goes? You seem to really want to do this, since you put it on the level of "reward", so it would be sad to skip on it after so much time.

either way, good luck, anon! :)
