Holy shit, how lardy is that cat? Oo

(Anonymous) 2013-09-16 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe not that much? I have a cat who does that, and looks a bit like that when she does. She's honestly not overweight, as confirmed by the vet. She's just a bruiser. I'm more inclined to think this cat just has a lot of loose skin.

My cat who is diabetic and underweight because of his disease looks like this when he sits like that (he's even a tuxedo cat like this one.) And last I checked, 9lbs is not fat. So the answer, is who knows. It all depends on when the cat is standing up and what the vet says.

Somebody needs to go on a diet...

Hint: it's the cat.

Fandom-formed or not, friendships sometimes go that way and it really sucks to see people you were close to become distant. And I wish I had something better to say than hang in there.

Secret 10 - Fandom, depression

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-09-15 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is a fat white and black cat sitting with its rear legs beneath it and pointing to the front, and with its front legs to the sides, like a person, on a couch.]

After I graduated from college, I was really depressed and finding fandom saved my life. I met some great people who pushed me to write and socialize more and it ended up being really good for me. But a lot of those people have drifted away from fandom and I feel like I've been left behind. I realized that nothing has changed. I'm still depressed and fandom has become a crutch instead of a comfort.

You can't rely on other people to provide your happiness for you, though :( It's a big cliché when you hear that you have to love yourself first, but it's kind of true I've learned. The ability to make it on your own is that one skill that you have to level up to as soon as you have the experience points because even the best relationships sometimes end.

This. Basing your happiness on other people is a surefire road to disappointment. Friendships come and go; the only person who will be there your entire life is yourself.

That's the thing about crutches and how they work...

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-09-16 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
Crutches are meant to be a temporary measure - helping you get on your feet until you can stand on your own.

Having a 'crutch' for a short time is not a bad thing - we all go through rough patches and have our own ways of getting through them. Relying on a crutch in the long run is the bad part.

I don't know if your depression is a physiological thing, or if you're depressed because of your life circumstances. Either way, finding solace in fandom won't cure it - dealing with your RL problems/circumstances will. Use fandom as a crutch - as a temporary measure to help you get back on your feet, not an excuse to never try in the first place.

Yes, THIS, OP. I was in a similar situation for a whilw, & i cannot emphasise enough to talk to someone no matter how hard it seems. Unfortunately fandom, as much as we might want it to, can't and won't fulfil all our social and emotional needs.

Please, please talk to someone IRL. Call a helpline service if you have to. Hang in there, and I'm sorry you're going through this. Be brave - you can seek help.

2nding the "crutches are a temporary measure" thing :) I think (& this is coming from my own experiences with anxiety and depression) that everything is only really a crutch that helps for a while and eventually peters out.

So every so often, maybe every year or two, we have to really dig back into the brain meats and sort things out again. I keep a list of things I call my "feel better book" which is silly, but ehh, it works for me. Things that are guaranteed to give me a boost - and when everything seems miserable and none of those things help or I can't even get up the energy to do any of them, then it's probably time to see a therapist and get some outside perspective for a few sessions so I'm good to go for the next year or two.

Fandom was good, but now it's time to try something new to push yourself forward again?
