(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)But if someone had a character they HATED and through a complete hissy fit because that character had a part in the story and was not tagged , most people would just be "geez who pissed in your cheerios?"
But if someone forgets to tag OC or doesn't know that it's a thing (Maybe they're new) than that's a crime against nature.
I'm not objecting that people should warn. But the reactions i'm seeing about people feeling entitled to be jerks rather than calmly inform them that it's good manners to tag for OC, and the "HATEBOMB THEM OFF THE INTERNET" reactions.
It's just a bit ridiculous. Are we this pissy and imamture, fandom?
Re: DA
(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)I don't know where you're getting "hatebomb" from "I will make a snarky comment about OC's and backspace the hell out of there (about OC fics I've been tricked into reading)".
I'm just annoyed about untagged OCs*, you're throwing a tantrum with words like "pissy", "immature" and "hatebomb" - because I know what I want to read and get annoyed at wasting my time because someone didn't tag properly?
If you don't tag an OC as the main character in fanfiction, you cannot be surprised people will be annoyed about it and probably make a snarky comment. People (generally) do not go into fanfic for OC's.
Is it really so hard for you to understand that when it comes to something fun in my free time, goddamn yes I want to read something I like and not be surprised with main!character!OC? o_O
*untagged characters I hate being main characters will also piss me off. just tag your main characters. Yes I'm going to be annoyed if I want to read about Pepper Potts' Amazing Adventure, it's advertised as such and instead I get the monologues of Captain America.
oh brother.....
(Anonymous) 2013-09-16 12:22 am (UTC)(link)But I also know that I made the choice myself to read those stories and go all the way through. I realized that I could get mad at them for not warning for things, but in the end there's no reason to get really angry because the choice to stop and read it was my own.
I encountered a book at the library that had a phrasing I thought was rude and offensive in the book. I got upset about it at the time because due to weird OCD mental shit it bothered me. also I was somewhat young. There was no label on the front saying "contains crude insults" I made the choice to read that story and in the end.
Also usually bad OC fics are quite in a hurry to pull the OC in (having gone through that stage myself). usually like two chapters. I just don't see the point in blowing your top over ...like five minutes wasted. and you can usually tell by the summary.
But answer me this...why waste extra thoughts and thus extra time on a bad fic, and just move onto something else.
I apologize. "Hatebomb were the words of the other user.and I'm not throwing a tantrum and I don't think it's unreasonable to be angry when you find a fic you don't like. But....getting this enraged over it? Once i see something i really can't tolerate I leave...but I don't spend too much time thinking about it. *shrug*
Re: oh brother.....
(Anonymous) 2013-09-16 12:40 am (UTC)(link)I'm just getting more and more confused by what you're trying to get across to me...
I'm not enraged, I will be frustrated or annoyed for...idk the minute it takes for me to realise the OC is a main character. I may take the 20 seconds to make a comment telling them to tag their OC's - then I will backspace off and go read something else and forget about the fic.
I get annoyed right now when I think about wasting time on anything - including untagged OC's because I hate wasting time. This is something both 'sides' get annoyed about for various reasons and the easy solution is to just tag OC's and save everyone time and frustration. I can read what I'm looking for and the author gets readers who actually want to read their OC. Everyone is happy.
>>>But answer me this...why waste extra thoughts and thus extra time on a bad fic, and just move onto something else.
I'm...I'm not? I think I've said about twice now that once I realise a fic is not what I want, I backspace. I may or may not leave a comment telling them to tag OC's. That takes like, 1 minute tops. Maybe 2 minutes if I'm on an iphone because I such at touchscreens and it's slow at posting.
Unless you're referring to this discussion? in which case I too have views that I want to share and I don't consider discussing it a waste of my time
Although now I am mostly just confused.
Re: DA
(Anonymous) 2013-09-16 12:27 am (UTC)(link)oh I see where the "hatebomb" term is coming from now. I'm not going to hatebomb someone - may or may not make a comment that is "tag your OC's" and then go find a different fic to read.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-16 12:51 am (UTC)(link)I apologize for being a bitch about it. I just....being someone who writes OCs (I do tag them though) I'm just used to getting a constant message in fanfiction "You're not wanted here, keep your stupid stories to yourself." It's just frustrating because...while you know that not everybody likes it , and you don't expect people to like it, being reminded a lot "I wouldn't read your fic even if it was good" and always feeling like if you get pissed off when someone is rude to you you'll be laughed at for being butthurt.
I don't know, it gets annoying. All that negativity aimed at you and if you get mad you're mocked and poked.
But I understand your position. People trying to trick someone into reading stuff is really shitty for someone who has limited time.
Please forgive me for my rudeness.
Re: AYRT
(Anonymous) 2013-09-16 01:07 am (UTC)(link)It's okay, I can see how it can be a downer. I just really don't like having OC's snuck in all sneaky like (or bait and switching main characters). If it's tagged as OC's well, I won't open the fic so I won't make an annoyed comment and everyone is good.
Although I'm sure some people would open and complain it anyway, but with OC's tagged some peoples who don't want to read it are warned and won't comment or show up.
Re: AYRT
(Anonymous) 2013-09-16 02:03 am (UTC)(link)Given your reaction and the reaction of others, it's just not the matter of "is it so hard to just tag for OCs?" It's the matter of making this such a grave offense and people's nasty reactions.
OC are not hurtful or offensive in themselves. If it's that offensive to you, it's your own problem, not the writer's. Snarky comments not necessary. If the fic is not what you want, gracefully back out like you would do with any other fic that isn't what you expect of fics.
OCs get this treatment only because of convention (because people wanna read their favorite males in slash), not because they are inherently problematic. Unquestioned convention needs to be challenged hard.
TD;DR: chill out first world problem
Re: AYRT
(Anonymous) 2013-09-16 02:32 am (UTC)(link)I'm not seeing the double standard. What are you referring to by that?
DA-just my perspective but...
(Anonymous) 2013-09-16 02:45 am (UTC)(link)Or in discussions about fics. Defending your ship when someone is needlessly rude about it? Awesome, go you! You bring up an OC and someone will hop on you about how shitty it is and if you don't like that? Bam you're a butthurt and pathetic lolcow.
It just feels like OCs are acceptable targets sometimes. /two cents.
Re: DA-just my perspective but...
(Anonymous) 2013-09-16 03:08 am (UTC)(link)Because I have already mentioned I don't like it if a canon character is the main character when they said it was gonna be another character, so i'm not exactly sure how I'm magically holding a double standard when I just want the fic to tag who the focus is so i can decide if i want to read it or not.
Re: DA-just my perspective but...
(Anonymous) 2013-09-16 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)I understand...i was just trying to think of what they meant. I don't know why they were using a bunch of SJW terminology.
It was probably a troll.

Re: AYRT
(Anonymous) 2013-09-16 02:59 am (UTC)(link)On the unlikely change you're not a troll tl;dr You wanna know why I don't want to read about OC's? Because I want to read about the canon characters. You wanna know why I may make a comment going "jfc tag your OC's"? Because they didn't tag their OC's
Re: DA
(Anonymous) 2013-09-16 12:33 pm (UTC)(link)But if someone forgets to tag OC or doesn't know that it's a thing (Maybe they're new) than that's a crime against nature.
Here's the thing, retard, a canon character turning up unwarned is fine because they are part of the fucking canon. An OC turning up is not part of the canon and is something that detracts from the canon. If you are going to depart from canon and put offensive crap in into the story then you tell people so they can avoid it. The only reason you morons don't warn is because you know people will skip the story and you'll spend the night cutting yourself over the lack of views compared to the good writers in your fandom and how people won't acknowledge your greatness with your super awesome OC. You are arrogant enough to think if you try suckering people in then they will love that mega mega ultra mega cool OC who is based on the posters on your bedroom wall if only they read it, and not back button in disgust.
Re: DA
(Anonymous) 2013-09-16 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)I love your stereotyping and assumption that OC writers cut when they don't get views. Really.
I always warn for OCs but I could see someone not warning because maybe they don't realize it's a thing*shrug* I just think it's sad that people get this ugly over an OC. I think OC's should be warned for just like a lot of things.
Grow up.
