Where as, and I beg your forgivness I this is not the case, I can't see anyone being passionate about refuse collection. It's sort of the 'Job' vs 'Vocation' thing. I just don't imagine that type of person with such a calling as to be a cop/medic coming home to argue the toss about which cartoon character is created by a secret racist and thoughts on yaoi etc.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-21 02:33 am (UTC)(link)I can see what you're saying but I'm having a lot of trouble agreeing wit the inclusion of cops. Police in some places in some countries probably are called to the life out of a desire to help people. I've met some good cops. But most that I've met in the 15 different states and 3 different countries I've live in were small minded, power-hungry bigots, many with violent tendencies. Whether they were corrupt to begin with or became that way after years on the job means nothing to me.
I just know that in city where I live now it's dangerous to pull over to the side of the road if a cop car pulls you over. People disappear that way and the city council has made statements reassuring people that it's OK to drive to an area where there are lots of people around before pulling over. And this is in the US where people seem to think the police could never be like this.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-21 11:12 am (UTC)(link)I am so sick of this arbitrary standard by which some (absolutely critical) jobs are disregarded and others are worshipped to the high heavens, although they sure as fuck have done everything in their power to no longer deserve it (lookin' at you LEOs).

I think some of the problem here is not understanding how division of labour works in society - that most jobs depend on other jobs to be done properly, or contribute to the economy and generate tax revenue so other jobs can be paid, and so on.
The other problem is that we are in a community made up of people who create communities around pieces of media that more often than not create an idealised, lone-hero-esque narrative out of certain jobs like law enforcement, being a doctor, being a lawyer, being a politician. It's not that people in those professions don't do great work, just that they're not the only type of jobs that are worthwhile and each part of a greater system that allows them to do their work. Also, just like in any pocket of society, some of those people are absolute rotters.
Where are the TV shows about teachers? Garbage removalists? Charity workers? Social workers? Palliative care workers? People who design ergonomic chairs? Bureaucrats who write policy that changes lives? The business woman who makes changes in her company so all her workers' rights are protected? Or just the guy who works steadily for decades, paying his taxes on time, looking after his family, being involved in his community and generally being an awesome citizen? Nowhere, because it's hard to make exciting TV about them, so we get another show about vigilante detectives with magical healing powers and a dark past. But that doesn't mean they should be forgotten e.g. by the original anon of this thread.
