There are more types of characters than totally passive and unnecessarily aggressive. It's not an either/or situation.

No, but OP is saying since a lot of YA fantasy books aimed at girls only offer them the choice between either the one or the other OP prefers the useless and pathetic to the arrogant and obnoxious.

DA. Different strokes for different folks, but to me, "useless" is the bottom of the barrel. Anything else is a step up. Overly aggressive and obnoxious is not ideal, but even if I don't care for the character, I'll still agree with the "at least they're not useless" sentiment.

I think the reader's screwed in either case. Useless characters are almost invariably annoying because they suck and aggressive characters are obnoxious because who likes somebody who's always picking a fight?
