There's a simple solution to this problem: stop reading shitty YA fantasy.

Yeah, this.
And stop reading vampire novels. Seriously, there are only a handful of those who are actually good novels.

By now, it just translates as a cheap way to make sales (and since Harry Potter success, all other series about 1) wizards 2) witches 3) werewolves 4) any kind of mystic creatures).

Or read Sunshine by Robin McKinley. A protagonist that doesn't spend the whole book in woe-is-me mode, huzzah! It might help that Sunshine isn't a teen, although if stream-of-consciousness style writing isn't their thing then the book might drive them nuts.

This is literally my favorite vampire novel ever.

Writing great female characters can't be that difficult.

That implies they are even possible to write.

Impossible for you maybe. But your issues with women are well known.

You'd think so, wouldn't you.

To be fair, writing great female or male characters can be difficult.

But:
1. There are more male characters to chose from so it's easier to find a well-written one.
2. Female characters tend to be held to a higher standard.

Who the hell ever called Zoey Redbird the "anti-Bella"? Zoey fucking IS Bella Swan, except with the life-and-death angst being replaced with even more noxious personality traits. Not sure where you're hanging out, but you need to migrate elsewhere pronto.

I gave up on the PC Cast books a lot sooner than I gave up on the Twilight ones. And it made me sad because I liked her fairy tale and Goddess romance novels.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-21 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, the Cast books were so terrible. And the drama of the writers responding to fans/critics...oy vey. (PC Cast + the r word should bring stuff up on Google.)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-22 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
I gave up because Goddess of Light had a really absurd number of typos in it. Like, really absurd for a published work.

Considering I can't remember anything else about the book, I'm banking on it being pretty forgettable too.

I think I'm mostly thinking of the Goddess of the Rose book, which I loved because I always loved Beast before he became human, so it was nice to see the beast stay a beast, even though they were in love, and the woman liked it that way.

Oh my gaaaaaaaaad, every fuckin' time I saw that cover in the bookstore I thought it was some weird Angelina Jolie book. "Who the fuck is writing Tomb Raider books now??!"

(Anonymous) 2013-09-21 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
There are more types of characters than totally passive and unnecessarily aggressive. It's not an either/or situation.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-21 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
No, but OP is saying since a lot of YA fantasy books aimed at girls only offer them the choice between either the one or the other OP prefers the useless and pathetic to the arrogant and obnoxious.

Secret 11 - Young Adult vampire novels

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-09-21 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is the covers of the books "Vampire Academy" by Richelle Mead and "Marked", by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast. They both show young women looking over their bare shoulders at the viewer.]

I think I'm starting to dislike the "anti-Bella Swan" characters more than the Bella Swans. And it bothers me that young girls see them as role models because "at least they aren't Bella Swan" which is just substituting one extreme with the other. I'd take a useless, needs-to-be-saved character over an aggressive, everything-I-do-is-right character any day.

I see your point on The House of Night series but (I personally) don't agree that VA and Rose belongs in here. One of the things I love most about this series is that all the characters are beautifully flawed. They make mistakes, their actions have consequences and they don't always get it right or make the right choices.

Rose from the Vampire Academy series isn't quite the anti-Bella you're making her out to be. Sure she's not a helpless victim but she also has flaws, gets hurt and has to be rescued at times.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-22 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
I respect your opinion (even though I think it's kinda dumb, but I hate Bella so I'm biased), but I don't like that Rose is being associated with this secret. She's a beautifully flawed character and VA's writing is too good to be compared to Twilight or any other typical YA vampire novel. I mean, it's not going to go down in the history books as a modern classic but it certainly works to set itself apart from the common YA tropes. It's a slap in the fact that VA is compared to Twilight. Especially when Rose is an amazing character.

+1

So much this.
