So what though? I mean, I didn't say you had to like her or whatever. But she's by far the most successful fangirl out there. Why not be pleased that a fangirl, any fangirl, reached her level of success? It shows that we can do it and if she did it, so can someone else.

Not to mention that there are a lot of creators out there that seem to be utterly vile individuals and yet they don't get same level of devoted, lingering wank that Claire does. I don't see hate like Claire gets directed at Frank Miller or others of his ilk and if anyone deserves outrage and disgust, it's him.

when people think of "fanfic authors who made it big into original fiction" they will look at her and whatshername from 50 shades of gray

do you want those to be examples of "good fanfiction authors who made it big into original fiction"?

this is the first time many people even hear about fanfiction, with those two

a jerk who clawed her way to the top by stepping on everyone else (and with help of good ol' nepotism, I hear?) and never showed a hint of remorse

and crappy smut that introduces people to BDSM with the safety rules off

So what? They were just the *first*. That doesn't mean "only". And it's kind of cool to me that people are able to make that transition, even if the authors most successful so far haven't been my favorites.

At this point, Claire is the one who is taking the high road, IMO. She's ignoring the wank and what else can she really do? If she acknowledges it or apologizes, it won't make her haters satisfied. They won't back off at all. They'll just go on gleefully hating her. Fuel to the fire.

Uh, are you serious? She's gone after people who've mentioned the plagiarism--like, emailed them, called them, etc. That's crazy for any kind of online wank, much less wank that is true (the truth is a valid defense against accusations of libel). She comes off as a bitter obsessive.

DA--I will stan for Lois McMaster Bujold and Ursula Vernon and Naomi Novik all damn day. I don't understand why I should have to support CC just because she's a fellow fangirl. If I see a non-famous fan displaying shitty behavior, I'm going to ask them to stop it and I certainly won't reward them for it. Why should her success suddenly mean I have to support her? There are other fangirls made good out there who didn't get where they are by being plagiarists and pretty nasty people. I think I'll throw my money and good reviews at them, and continue to tell people who ask my opinion of CC's books that there are better authors out there. Perhaps if she'd written, I dunno, a mystery series about little old ladies and cats, or non-fiction, I would have less reason to think she has no regrets about her fannish behavior.

I got plenty big hate for Orson Scott Card, for a fer-instance. I have spent time hating on Frank Miller, too.

Mostly what I have for CC is perpetual contempt.
