*pokes head in shyly and is a bit pleasantly surprised.*

*was also expecting and hoping this secret wouldn't be in the first batch (I was pretty late to submit it I thought) because I wanted to space out the OC secrets so people wouldn't get annoyed. Oh well*

Okay hey there. I've read through the comments and a lot of you bring up some good point. (I"m kind of actually considering creating a place for this sort of world building theoretical and character creation help centered place, if enough people were interested.

I apologize if my secret was a little strongly worded. I didn't mean to come off as insulting to people who didn't share my tastes. Let me say this I fully support people sticking to their tastes and reading to their tastes. My only problem is that some people put down stories that aren't to their taste, complain about warned fics that have something they don't like, claim that everyone shares their tastes, or calls something that is outside of their tastes automatically shitty. Because really it's annoying and obnoxious. I don't do it for other people's tastes even if certain fics annoy me.

I don't see why creating characters within a fandom's universe shouldn't be considered part of fandom. I mean I know a lot of people are interested in canon characters.....but characters aren't the only part of a story. Setting is a pretty important part of it too.

I know someone of you may think I'm being oversensitive and I apologize. It just frustrates me a bit. It's like, those of you who have ever been fans of an unpopular ship, or like a type of fic (AU. Crossover, Alpha /Beta type fics (or whatever they're called)that isn't popular or has lots of people that hate it, imagine being in a place where you're trying to talk about and share enthusiasm about it but someone comes in and says "I hate this it's shit" and then five more people come in and some of them are mocking you or reminding you of the bad examples which you are already PAINFULLY aware of and assuming you're just like them.

Also, people seem to have a shallow idea of what a more OC friendly comm would actually discuss. Ideally we would be able to discuss things like theories on how the world works, or ideas of the fictional culture world expanding stuff. Because understanding that stuff would help for creating characters in the universe. In my opinion writing Elsewhere Fic is an exercise in exploring the world beyond the one we know. It's theorizing about what the wizarding community of Africa, Russia, Australia, Canada and South America are like. It's theorizing about what the other countries are doing while Panem is busy fighting itself. It's exploring and designing what one planet's culture is like in a Star Trek fic (forgive me if I made a mistake I'm not really into Star Trek honestly) , it's exploring what other unique things an individual could do with super powers other than save the world.

It would be talking about how we can merge what we know about canon with what we have in mind. and make our ideas fit the canon. It would be asking questions about a universe and a situation. I rarely bring up individual OCs of mine to ramble to people about because guess what , I ALREADY KNOW that bores people. I already know people just won't be interested in a character they know nothing about if i just bombard them with rambling about them.

I know for a fact that fanfiction writers are capable of thoughtful analyzing open mindedness and creative ideas. Which is why I'm a little dismayed that so many of them think that OC writers are only capable of behaving like a Tara Gillesbie stereotypes when talking with one another about their ideas and thoughts. It makes me a little bitter when I see people who believe 'OCs have no place in fandom because I'm bored by them'. I mean sure there are people who had bad experiences with OC creators and now expect someone who writes an OC to corner them and blabber endlessly about their favorite /pet OC. But I have had HORRENDOUS experiences with shippers (some Harry Potter shippers dear LORD *shudder* NEVER going back to Fiction Alley) . Yet I don't expect all shippers to be entitled or angry people who bash the author and attack rival shippers.

As someone currently working on two big oc-dependent fics, and who has several favourite fics by others that involves ocs (not sues or stus, but decent characters who are there to provide a different perspective or understanding of the canon character/s), I love the idea of a comm like you're talking about.

We get so caught up in shipping in fandom, and that can be so limiting sometimes, both in terms of how we're working with the world and original text, and in what we allow the characters to do. I love ocs because of what they let me/others do.

I know what you mean about building other parts of a world that don't get covered in canon.

I know I harp on my favourite fic a lot, but it's a good example in this case - the writer has done a lot of world-building for both Dwarven society and Easterling society in LotR. Dwarves have a bit of coverage in canon, but all we know about the Easterlings is that they serve the Dark Lord.

When you know an OC's background, you know better how they will see the canon characters, and react to canon events.

I've discussed this sort of thing in general communities. I've discussed this sort of thing in SHIPPING communities.

Talking about "the lore" in general communities is pretty common, in my experience. It's the OC part that throws people.

I suppose.

But I have been told a million times "I don't know who an OC is so I don't care" and I get it when it comes to shipping OCs and OC RP. But I don't get the point of getting angry if some say asks a question like.

"So I'm writing a fic of daily life for people in District 3 anybody have any thoughts for portraying the general life and culture of people there."

Next time if would help if you didn't post such a long-winded secret with such an eye-jarring background
