Bad Classroom Teacher

(Anonymous) 2013-09-25 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
So I have been in my classroom for almost 2 weeks. We are still only doing worksheets (apparently this is all they do). So in a 45 minute class, they do 15 minutes of work then play on the computer until the next block. The worksheet topics are not even connected most of the time! One day they are finding the average and the next they are doing multiplication.

My teacher is an idiot (or super lazy). He asked me how to pronounce onamonapia today because he forgot. I told him and he then mispronounced every time he used it while talking to the students. And then he explained it horribly, which is why I have to go back and re-explain. I do this for like 40% of lessons. He tried to teach a student how to find the average of some numbers (on a worksheet), and he just did one example. And that was him trying to teach it. I had to explain to the student after the teacher left and show him some alternative steps (like circling the numbers so you know how many to divide by).

AND NOW! Last week he told me he would be having surgery in October and might be gone 2-3 days (he was having it during out 4 day weekend). Today he tells me he talked to his sister (who had the surgery) and found out she was out of work for TWO MONTHS. I was like, Oh. And he assured me there would be a sub who has subbed before in his class. An 80 year old who is hard of hearing. And the last time she subbed, one of the students pushed her and she almost broke her hip.

But don't worry. He is leaving me plenty of worksheets!

He asked me how to pronounce onamonapia

...Is this some math term I've never heard, or is it a misspelling of onomatopoeia? And if it's the latter, what kind of class are you teaching that covers maths and language at the same time?

/facepalm my phone corrected it to that for some reason (it originally corrected it to ornamentation). But no it is onomatopoeia. And we do teach math/science/history/english/reading because the classroom is Special Education. So some of the kids stay all day in the class while some go out for 1-2 classes (and probably get to have real teaching).

Having trouble pronouncing a word is not a sign of stupidity. Especially tricky ones like onomatopoeia.

Is this the same anon that's been complaining about their teaching job? If so, I just feel really awful for your students. Just...those poor kids. It seems like such a toxic unhelpful unsupportive environment for learning.

When it is your job to teach students a subject, you should know how to pronounce the word (at least try and learn it the day before you have to teach it and not as you are passing out worksheets).

And yes. I hate this classroom and have no idea how to help these kids learn something. In my "Things a TA will do" thing it says I can't disagree/confront the teacher about anything in front of the students. So when he says something or teaches them something wrong, I just have to stare holes in the back of his head and die a little inside (then quietly try and go one on one with each student to teach them the right way).

Do these kids never go to lunch? Can you not spend 5 minutes at the end of a day having a one-on-one? Maybe him being gone will be a good thing, if he's so bad.

Also, if you feel so useless, is there no advisor or mentor you can talk to for guidance? Surely you didn't get tossed into a school with nobody but Fandom Secrets for help.

They get lunch but they spend it in the classroom. The only time all of them are out is during gym (in which they get to run around and such).

I have no free time during school and all the students leave as soon as the bell rings to ride buses home.

I might email an old professor to ask her what to do. As it is, I don't want to rock the boat with administration because I just got the job 2 weeks ago and really need the income. Also, if I do go to them and they do nothing, I'll have to work with this teacher for the rest of the school year.

I'm saying, when all the students are out of the classroom for gym or whatever, that would be a good time to discuss things with the teacher one-on-one. But it seems like a mostly moot point, since he's going to be away for so long.

Definitely email the old professor for advice on handling the class, but the long and short of it is to be a good teacher's aid, you have to make the time (paid or unpaid) and find an appropriate way to address concerns with the appropriate people, whether that's the teacher in question or the administration.

...How is he passing his district observations? How? This seriously just makes me so mad. So very, very mad. Those kids deserve better.

I don't know. I. Don't. Know. I mean, I don't understand where he is getting his grades/test grades from. I can only assume they don't observe in his classroom. Apparently, the school/class I am in is the end of the line for most of those students (in middle school level). There is no placement for "worse" students.

They have to be. I mean... I don't know where you live but I thought all classroom have to have it done. Like it's mandated or something.

Oh my goodness. I just- if I were you I would be very, very sorely tempted to report the whole situation to the district and the parents.

Honestly, I'm so mad I have no words; I can't imagine what you must be going through. I have never understood sticking kids in some "last resort" school where they are expected to still eek out passing grades when no-one gives a flying fuck. I had a couple friends who placed in one of those -- one somehow got her shit together, and the other... well I didn't hear about her once they graduated.

UGH! This is the nonsense that makes our school system such a horrible place for anyone who isn't all about self-motivation or happen to land in the right classes.

I am so sorry, OP.

Can you use the opportunity with the sub to do some lessons? Depending how easily distractable she is, let her know what you want to do and get in her involved in giving you feedback regarding your strategies? Something?
