I've never seen anyone describe chapped lips as sexy, though. I usually see it in fics with very rough, outdoorsy characters for whom it would make sense to have chapped lips. Not as "omfg XYZ has chapped lips, that's so hot."

(Anonymous) 2013-09-27 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Missing the point! It's a description used a many a romantic or sexy scene, so...

Great

(Anonymous) 2013-09-26 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Now all I can think of are dry, flaky lips scratching up and down the shaft of a penis. Thanks, OP. >.

GREAT.

That's going to be in my head all night.

God yes. Everyone's lips are chapped and everyone's hands are callused. I don't care if you're a jaded war veteran or high school boy. Callused. Calluses everywhere. Must be hard to get dressed with the hard leather sausages you call fingers in Fanficlandia.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-26 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Except when they're callous hands.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-27 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
The calluses don't bother me so much, because if you do literally any work with your hands regularly, you will have calluses. I have cross-stitching calluses, for God's sake.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-27 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
*highfive* I have a calluses from drawing. It's right where my pencil lays.

It makes me wonder if those fanfic writers have ever had a sexy moment with a person who has calloused hands. Because callouses generally don't feel nice. They're scratchy and dry and sometimes look downright disgusting (e.g. those really hard white ones).

[personal profile] poisonenvy 2013-09-27 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
I've had sexy moments with a dude with calloused hands (he plays guitar, so his fingers are pretty calloused). Probably more than the one guy, but he's the only one I've noticed them on because he was teaching me guitar too, and I've got super soft hands because I'm a massage therapist. Didn't bother me none.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-27 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
That can feel really nice tho, depending on whether you like it or not. To each their own!

(Anonymous) 2013-09-27 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
I know a lot of people that actually do have calluses on their hands. I do. You work a lot with your hands, you get calluses. If your fandom happens to be actiony, I'd expect it.

And don't most people lips get chapped in the winter?

Yeah I hate this. It's everywhere in my fandom for some reason. To me it's almost as bad as being like "and his teeth were yellowing" before a kiss scene. Or commenting on bad breath. Like... why?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-27 08:45 am (UTC)(link)
There are also people, like me, who like realistic/naturalistic writing. Not everything has to be sexy.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-27 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I can see being annoyed because it's overused, but I don't find chapped lips that off-putting? Possibly because I kiss dudes exclusively and a lot of dudes have them, I don't know.

(Not saying you don't kiss dudes, OP, but I'd find "his perfectly smooth lips" way weirder for about 90% of the characters I read about. Chapped lips are kind of a fact of life.)

[personal profile] pelespen 2013-09-27 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
There are descriptions in between "chapped" and "perfectly smooth," though. Or, better yet, they don't have to be described in florid detail, period.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-27 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe your dudes should start using chapstick...

(Anonymous) 2013-09-27 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I don't mind if a character has chapped lips (like Castiel from Supernatural, who has noticeably chapped lips). But yeah, it's ridiculous how often they are described as something sexy in fics. Uh....no. Chapped lips are annoying/uncomfortable for the person who has them, and dry/gross for the person who has to kiss them.

Yeah, I wish this would die as well. On a related note, I bite my lips when I'm tired and anxious so not only do I have uneven rough lips, it fucking hurts. Sexy lip biting that leads to Sexy Bleeding is my fanfic nemesis. WHY.

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-09-27 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
It didn't bother me the first few times but I see it a lot now and yeah, I don't really think it's sexy. Realistic, probably. But sexy? Nope.
darkmanifest: (Default)

[personal profile] darkmanifest 2013-09-27 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Aw, I like the mention of chapped lips, the realism is kinda sexy to me...there's a lot of room between "just dry/rough enough to be notable but not a problem and maybe even oddly pleasant" and "omg your skin is sloughing off is that blood get away get away", and I usually imagine closer to the former on the chapped spectrum. But lord above knows I have other peeves.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-27 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
How is it realistic when most writers just use "chapped" for a lack of a better word? Answer: it's not.

The one time I read about chapped lips in a kissing scene, I thought it was really sexy as well. Because realism can be hot to me, and also because I found it sexy that the point of view character was so into the person he was kissing that he enjoyed the kiss even with the chapped lips, because EMOTION.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-27 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
you and I must not be reading the same kissing scenes, because I've never seen this. (and I've read lots of them!)
