Fandom and faith?

[personal profile] al28894 2013-09-29 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Long philosophical introspection below.

For about a month now I've been thinking about colliding fandom and the real world together.

Lemme start first. My sister is a pious Muslim and she watches a lot of anime alongside with me. Code Geass, Studio Ghilbi, Makoto Shinkai, etc. . I've also started writing a fic about a man who forms a relationship with a alien inside an abandoned church, and that got me thinking a bit about some stuff. Because of this, over the past few weeks I've been thinking a lot about what would happen if fandom and faith would ever collide; not in a "what-if-this-character-ends-up-here-on-earth" way, but something akin to "look-at-us-through-their-eyes" kind of way.

Example 1: Some disgruntled members of parliament stages a coup, and an entire capital city rebels against the plotters. Along the way, a group of religious students (or leaders) found themselves face to face with several con members in a non-opting-out situation (they both can't back down or turn away from one another). What would happen once they meet? What would they think of the other? What will the national/international news say about the amalgamation if their attention turns on them?

Another example: an alien lands on a planet that is full of multiple faiths. The alien becomes enraptured by one of them and decides to covert. How will the original practitioners react to this? What will the other faiths do now? What happens if the faith doctrines collide with members of the alien race's doctrines?

I admit, the whole thing is a bit far out even for me, but ever since I've took notice of "what I do vs. what I enjoy" everyday, or been thinking about this more and more. I also think that I haven't articulated myself enough here (it's 8 am here and I'm sleepy) so I think I'll just make a fandom!secret for next week instead.

I also wonder what would it be like if there's a Muslim Turian out there. How will fandom react to that ?

I'm...not really sure what you're getting at? Like...what would religious people think of fandom, or what would fandom think of religious people showing up? Because both have, and do happen.

If you mean the former, it would really depend on specifics. The more hardcore believers might not uncomfortable with, and might say something. Otherwise I think they'd mostly leave fandom alone if they don't end up being interested - and maybe make a few jokes at it's expense.

The reverse...Let's just say that, in my experience, fandom tends to be pretty vicious towards certain religions - and usually in a hypocritical way. What I normally see is fandom folks doing the song and dance of "You have to respect my beliefs [or lack there of], but *I* can call you're entire system of beliefs fairy tales, completely insult it, and all the people who believe it...but if you get upset? Then you're just a radical religious person!"

One aspect of your second example is really intriguing to me, the part about how the original practitioners react to the alien converting. The doctrines part not as much for me because I don't really care about religious doctrine of any kind.

I'm not sure what you mean in your first example though. "Along the way, a group of religious students (or leaders) found themselves face to face with several con members in a non-opting-out situation (they both can't back down or turn away from one another)." I'm not sure what you mean by this. What are con members? And how does this tie in to the coup and the subsequent rebellion?

"What will the national/international news say about the amalgamation if their attention turns on them?" Whose attention turns on who? I'm sorry, I'm just really lost.

And I'm not really sure what you were asking in the first place. Sorry if this isn't the kind of response you were seeking.
