But... Mikasa is not a love interest? At least at this point in the story, there's no indication that their relationship goes beyond brother and sister. I suppose it MIGHT go that way, but I honestly don't see any sexual tension between them at all right now. Mikasa seems to have an obsession with family, not with getting laid.

I'm pretty sure Mikasa has romantic feelings for Eren, but it is and will always be one-sided. There's no way Eren is in love with Mikasa when he cares more about Armin than her.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, I would love to ship Armin and Eren, but I can't say I see that, either. I think Eren just knows Mikasa doesn't need to be taken care of - she is both more physically and emotionally able to take care of herself than he is, whereas Armin is more vulnerable in both categories (in general).

If this were a typical shounen, of course Mikasa would be the love interest. But at this point, I don't think this is typical and making Mikasa and Eren together would take a lot of build-up to work that just hasn't happened yet. I don't even see Mikasa's romantic feelings - except in that she seems to care only about exactly two people: Eren and Armin, and honestly, mostly Eren. I don't see it beyond family at this point, though.

There's the blushing when Ian said that Eren was her boyfriend, and she blushed around Eren a couple of times. Then there's her jealousy towards Annie when Annie and Eren were training together, and we know that she believes that there's something going ong between Annie and Eren.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
That doesn't equal romantic feelings. She can get flustered or caught off guard without it meaning anything.

She is always calling him family and the circumstances from which she met him and was taken in to his family at the same time she saw her own family brutally killed all points to strong familial feelings.

And honestly her reaction about Annie was justified. Seeing as how Annie killed his comrades and he's not doing anything, accusing him of having feelings for her is a logical conclusion.

If someone accused me of being my brother's lover, my reaction would be "what the hell, dude, I'm his sister", but I wouldn't get flustered or blush.

I think their case is a little different because since they're not blood-related, Mikasa's always been aware that some people are probably going to misjudge their relationship. My best friend and I have been mistaken for a couple, and it embarrassed me because she's much more like a sister than a lover to me.

If this were a typical shounen

I hate to break this to you, but it's become a typical shounen. Every episode after Eren got his god-power may as well have been BLEACH/Naruto, because it followed the exact same fight-fail-FIGHT! format. The fights might be gorier and the message might be a little different, but it's still pretty typical shounen now.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't remember Ichigo or Naruto losing every single fight and being useless. Look at the current arc, it's about Eren kidnapped with the rest of characters having to rescue him! If this was a typical shounen, Mikasa would have been the one kidnapped and Eren the one rescuing her.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
You need to check your memory, because Ichigo and Naruto did lose every fight in the beginning. Everyone they faced would beat them and be all LOL FAILURE, then the god power would come in and they would win. The biggest difference is that Eren loses fights and then it takes a while for his god power to kick in. Still the same thing.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
But he looses with his god power. He lost against Annie in the forest, he lost again in the city, and he lost against Reiner.

I don't remember the MCs in Bleach and Naruto beating people with their stumps and getting turned into a backpack.

Well, those shows will never end, so there's still time.

By god power you mean Wolf Effect Power. Nearly every time he activates it, he gets his ass handed to him. Kind of hilarious if you ask me.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-30 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
SA

Err..Worf effect. Why did I write the other?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Why do people equate "being in love" with "wanting to get laid" as evidence that one character doesn't have feelings for another? Being in love with someone doesn't mean you're always thinking about fucking them. I don't ship Mikasa with Eren at all, but I'm sick of that excuse.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Most people aren't asexual, so if they have feelings for someone they want their dicks/vaginas.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes? but it's not all they want, all the time. It's just one part of being in love, not something that equals it as a full description of someone's feelings. Ergo why it doesn't make sense to say that X can't canonically be in love with Y because X is never shown thinking about wanting to have sex with Y.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
People can have sex with people they don't love.

On the flip side, just be cause somebody is in love, it doesn't mean that bedding them is first and foremost on their mind.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Because... sexual attraction?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it really disappoints me that there isn't more platonic male/female friendships in fiction.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't think that anon meant platonic, but rather romantic love that's not all sex all the time.

Yeah, I'm starting to feel only a few comms have understood the notion of romantic love without the fucking part.
