But... Mikasa is not a love interest? At least at this point in the story, there's no indication that their relationship goes beyond brother and sister. I suppose it MIGHT go that way, but I honestly don't see any sexual tension between them at all right now. Mikasa seems to have an obsession with family, not with getting laid.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure Mikasa has romantic feelings for Eren, but it is and will always be one-sided. There's no way Eren is in love with Mikasa when he cares more about Armin than her.

Why do people equate "being in love" with "wanting to get laid" as evidence that one character doesn't have feelings for another? Being in love with someone doesn't mean you're always thinking about fucking them. I don't ship Mikasa with Eren at all, but I'm sick of that excuse.

~Spoilers~

Well, you could argue that Eren is the only family Mikasa has left. Also she seems to be the type to be really quick-tempered and act before thinking (her lashing at Levi after the fem!titan took Eren, their fight with the female titan and Mikasa just throwing herself into battle without thinking, etc.)

I do think Mikasa has feelings for Eren (at least that's the impression I've gotten from the manga), but I don't think she's aware of them. And from what I've also noticed, the mangaka tends to write them as actual teens in the battleground.

Feels ahoy

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
But she isn't a love interest. At least, not right now. And certainly not for Eren (Jean/John remains hopeful, but that's the topic for another long winded monologue). They are brother and sister and if they ever *do* get paired in canon I will feel pretty icky about it.

Spoilers for the show to follow:

But anyway, Mikasa is interesting to me because of how incredibly broken she is. Everyone on the show is messed up and many characters have driving obsession ("I will protect Eren" "I will KILL ALL TITANS" "I will prove myself" "I will cut you into tiny pieces to learn how you work") but Mikasa is special to me because we see hers develop. She's tiny, her parents were just murdered, she's too scared to run or even move and here comes her knight in bright red scarf to save her. But then he gets caught and she's too scared to do anything, but at his motivation she just *snaps* and becomes this stone cold killer. (Look at the cutie pie with her parents, then look at the girl all the boys run from in episode 1. Yikes.)
This is then compounded with the loss of literally everything else in her life (aside from Aramin, but I don't think she was too attached to him at the time). So just her love for everything in her whole life is funneled into Eren and, like a white dwarf, it's density and energy is enormous. I think it's cool and interesting to watch.

One could argue that this is still sexist because it's a lady who is totally obsessed with taking care of a man, and I can't argue. I love it, but if you don't that's ok. That's why it's so cool that there are tons of other cool ladies from which to take your pick. (Hanji, Petra, Annie, Sasha, etc.) Some of them are "traditionally feminine" like Petra, some are not like Annie. It's cool. It's another reason why I like AoT so much.

It took you more than the first episode to realise that she's flat as fuck? Lucky you, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I disagree. During Trost she was an interesting character. Eren was the most important thing to her, but that's not all she was. Then after that she became a cold blooded killing machine obsessed with Eren. Her whole characterization nowadays is "muh Eren".

I never liked her that much after Trost, but after she tried to kill Ymir two chapter ago and admitted that she would kill all her comrades for Eren without any regrets, I can't stand her anymore.

No, she started out great and then got worst.

She punched Eren for insulting Armin. Then when Eren supposedly died she still had the resolve to live and told Armin she wasn't gonna leave him behind and showed regret that she carelessly ran into battle with comrades following after her.

Now it's just a nasty obsession that I'm hoping will get dealt with via some character development.

I find it hard to judge any of the characters in this show for their lack of multi-dimensional responses to what's going on around them. They live in a perpetual nightmarish hellscape where everyone is constantly being eaten alive, and the anime revels in the hopelessness of it all. "Life is shit and then you get bitten in half, lol enjoy." The fact that Mikasa or Eren or anyone can function beyond horrified screaming and desolate shock is astounding, tbh, let alone finding ~purpose.

MTE. Pretty sure most people who were multi-dimensional in that situation would dig themselves a hole to die in and be happy for it.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
She's like batman.

I've been slack about keeping up with these series, but I was having my suspicions from the start that she might end up that way because she reminded me of Riza Hawkeye, whom I also eventually considered very shallow. I really hope Mikasa escapes that disappointment.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
The anime is pushing the love interest angle more than the manga I think, especially with how they replaced Armin with Mikasa during his and Eren's scenes together in the latest episode. I was so looking forward to the Eremin bonding and all I got was EreMika being pushed in my face ;_; I mean, I'm pretty sure EreMika will be endgame anyway (if they all survive), but at least don't take those little scenes away from me ;_;

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
The anime fucked up a lot of character development I considered important.

Not only replacing Armin with Mikasa, but also erasing the mutual respect Eren and Annie had by deleting the flashbacks. Also deleting the moment from the manga where Mikasa was feeling guilty about Levi's injury and used that as a motivation to deal with Annie, instead they thought it was better to keep the annoying as fuck Eren tunnel vision.

Someone behind the anime wanted to really push EreMika hard at the cost of other positive moments and it really bothers me :/

I agree to an extent. I mean, I have nothing against her caring about Eren. But it would be so nice to have her care for other people too. She's got lots of people around her that she could be friends with (Armin, Sasha, Jean, Connie for example) but she refuses to open her world to anyone else.

True she's a badass, but there has got to get some motivation that is not Eren.

I admired her so much in the very beginning when she punched Eren for insulting Armin. Where is that Mikasa?

Thankfully the manga is not over, and hopefully she gets some character development.

Eh, I mostly agree. Up until around the point you have pictured in that secret, I really liked Mikasa/Eren, because Mikasa was so clearly into him. Now I think her obsession with him is unhealthy and pretty 1D, so I ship her with basically everyone else but Eren.

(She's still my favorite, I just wish Eren would go away.)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
It would be a real shame if they got together or had any strong romantic implications.

She met him after her own family was murdered and after being taken in to his family. It's only natural that she would latch onto it strongly.

I think it's more admirable for Mikasa to be so dedicated to the idea of protecting family in a cruel world rather than diminished into psycho yandere love interest that some people try to make her to be.

However I do wish she'd be more considerate about her own life and her comrades. She doesn't have to stop caring about Eren, but she should definitely start caring about other people more.

You know I'd ship Mikasa with literally anyone else EXCEPT Eren. I'm actually okay with pretty much all ships, but I can't ship Eren with anyone.

At least with Mikasa there was some promise, maybe she only seems obsessive because Eren is constantly in danger or getting kidnapped.

Eren, to be honest, is more one-tracked mind and brutal than Mikasa. He told Reiner he'd make their deaths as painful as possible and kept trying to attack without even attempting to listen, and yet only Mikasa is viewed as the ruthless one?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
The anime seems to be really pushing for a romantic angle between Mikasa and Eren with unfortunate consequences for Mikasa's character (as well as ruining the Eren/Armin/Mikasa OT3). Try reading the manga instead?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally I like Mikasa because she's willing to straight up murder anyone who's a threat to Eren. Her obsession reads like a character flaw to me and I hope she eventually grows out of it.

Turning Mikasa and Eren into a couple though... I wouldn't forgive the author for that.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Mikasa still wanted to live even when she thought Eren was dead. I don't blame her for being reckless and confused for a while after just finding out the last person she considered family was dead. All these kids in this show are traumatized. And she still showed how much she cared for Armin.

When she met Eren, he saved her life and took care of her. Now she's continually repaying the debt.

I like that Mikasa has limits. She's closed off and says she can't care about everybody. She has her two childhood friends and they are the world to her. Even then there's that scene where she's horrified that her classmates and comrades are out dying while this selfish guy is blocking the gate and stopping people from fleeing.

Mikasa is multidimensional, just in very subtle ways. I mean if you think she's flat, then you'd have to make the same argument for most of the cast as many of them only have one goal in mind. It's just a driving force to keep them going.

Like others have said, I don't see Mikasa as a love interest (at least, not in the foreseeable future), but I definitely agree about her being rather one-dimensional. As far as I've seen (i.e. the entirety of the anime), she hasn't had a single meaningful conversation/thought not concerning Eren in some way. Honestly, I don't care if it's reasonable/realistic that she has such an obsession with him given their back story, but the fact remains that's it's not very interesting. Just because Mikasa's physically strong doesn't mean she's a strong character.

Of course, I still like Attack on Titan very much regardless of my gripes with Mikasa.

(Jean!icon is the embodiment of my disappointment with Mikasa's character.)
