I have met some of my closest friends on the internet (particularly WoW when I played). Older people just don't understand how the internet community works. There is a lot of bad, but there is also a lot of good.

I never noticed that little hand coming out of the portal on Chard's icon.

Um yeah. Noodle's hand. That's what that is.
I'm curious why vethica is hiding up in the corner myself.

Psssh. Noodle has no hands. He just has those wings. And maybe Vethica is frightened?

I'm torn between thinking this while secret is full of coded meaning and thinking it was made on impulse while drunk.

She's had that since the Homestuck update it's referencing.

(Unfortunately, in this context, it makes John's hand look like a teeny dick, I think...)

That is what I thought it was but I didn't want to say anything.

Explanation (let me tell you about homestuck)

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2013-09-29 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Short answer, there was a retcon when one of the characters reached his hand through a portal in space and time. Said hand suddenly started appearing in assorted past strips. A meme at the time was to have it subsequently show up in all manner of places. Chard edited her icon with said hand and left it that way since.

Wow. That comic's plot is a lot more intricate than I thought.

Intricate is one way to put it.

'Makes Primer look straightforward' is another.

Hussie himself had some comparisons between Primer and Homestuck, namely that he figured watching the former was a good warm-up for reading the latter.

Are you kidding? It's intricate as hell! (read it)

We have a wiki for a reason (and it's a real full wiki). it's to help us get shit done in real life. Because one off sentences from thousands of pages ago (literally thousands) suddenly have a significance or new meaning in later times. The urge to go back and reread can be strong.

It's just not all that serious about it sometimes.

Every time I see the black horned guy with the sword in his chest, he's pictured doing something creepy or awesome. Now I see him getting hit in the head with a newspaper. I don't even know what to think anymore.

Spoilers

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Those are actually ears since he's part dog at that point.

Which is actually the reason he's letting Jade hit him with a newspaper in that scene (she used to be the dog's owner, so he's compelled by dog instincts to be loyal and obedient to her).

(Spoilers in here) He's half dog

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2013-09-29 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
That's really all you need to know about him. Those aren't horns, those are ears. One part murderous gangster, one part god, one part dog. (the simplified version is he fused with a god dog. Phenominal power, but still a dog). Which means he's bound by the inescapable love a dog has for their master.

Annnd Homestuck has stolen my idea for a novel again.

I've had a million ideas that I've seen show up in other works and I understand it can be disappointing, but it's also kind of neat. All these different themes and images are repeated in stories over and over, because they have some kind of meaning to us. We might not remember what is exactly, but we keep creating stuff, partly to figure it out, or because we want to play with a concept and see how we can make it different.

This is gonna sound harsh, but the difference between you and Hussie is that Hussie actually wrote his thing and put it out there. I'm saying this to encourage you, not to put you down--I also have a bunch of vague ideas that have yet to be turned into anything worth reading. But don't give up on an idea just because something similar is in another story. All that's gonna do is make you miserable. Write your novel, work on it, and hopefully share it with the world someday. I guarantee, it won't be Homestuck. It will have the same universal themes that show up in every story (think of them as atoms). It might make someone think "Hm, this reminds me a little of Homestuck." But that's a good thing, I personally love stories that remind me of other stories I like. But Hussie is Hussie (and not to mention he had a LOT of reader-input for the first couple of acts and still gets ideas from his fandom), and you are you. You have different things to say and different ways of saying them.

They're dog ears!

He's not as awesome as he thinks he is. But that's what makes him one of my favorites.

I thought it was a dick. I have a dirty mind.

Not that 'surprise dick' makes more sense in a KStew icon.

... it's not a dick? fuck.

I don't think it's "older people" so much as people who don't participate or make friends on the internet in the same way. It all depends. I have younger cousins and siblings that think internet friendships aren't real, I have older aunts and a grandmother who participate in online communities and consider those people genuine friends.

So yeah, it's not an age thing, it's a "people who don't understand the internet community" thing.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconding this. My parents understand perfectly, but when I was in high school I told one of my best friends about fandom and she flipped out, saying I was putting myself in danger, and this friend was NOT someone who played it safe in the "real world" by any stretch.

I was doing some pretty sexual roleplaying when I was about 13-14, and that ended up in this (heavily paraphrased) exchange with a friend of mine when I mentioned it:

Me: *finishes explaining roleplay, including the sexual aspects of it*

My friend: "Oh my god, that's dangerous! You're having sex with an Internet stranger!"

Me: "No, I'm not, we're pretending to have sex by talking about it."

My friend: "But what if he stalks you down and rapes you? It's dangerous!"

Me: "...and what if someone from school does the same thing? Digital sex is a lot safer than real sex, I can't get STDs or pregnant. And anyone could track me down and kidnap me if they wanted, but everyone here knows my name and where I go to school and what city I live in. This guy doesn't. And he's a hell of a lot nicer than most of the guys we know."

This sort of thing went back and forth for a while. I could understand why someone might be concerned about a 14-year-old getting up to something sexual in a more general sense, but I still don't understand why a 14-year-old having online-only sexual activity is somehow supposed to be worse than a 14-year-old having actual sex with another teenager or otherwise RL person.

By the same token, I recently met one of my online friends for the first time in RL, but we'd known each other for years. Me, her, and another online friend spent weeks travelling together, which is a lot more than I have ever done with any of my RL friends. And it was great! But even if we'd never met in RL, I'd still call her one of my closest friends.
