It bothers me when my bookish friends make fun of people who can't read, because I wonder what they'd say about me if they knew I barely passed Algebra I in high school. I know, bookish people can't do math, but that's not the point...

No one should be made fun of for not being able to read (only led in the right direction to overcome that, since it is a very life-changing and while I don't want to use the word 'ruining', it is something that will hold people back).

At the same time, why can't bookish people do math? I'm a bookie (not in the taking bets sort of way), and I'm fine with math. I wasn't good with calculus, but I also only ever took it once and we had a very shit teacher (normally I hate to go the 'it's not me it's the teacher!' route, but if you have a class of thirty to start, five left at the end, and three fail the final exam, the odds of it being the teacher are a little higher than 28 people being THAT stupid).
starphotographs: I like him. He kind of looks and acts like one of my characters. (I did not know this when I started liking him!) (Victor (...>:|))

Yeeeeeah, that kind of thing bothers me, too. I've seen way too many conversations where people mention being bad at math hijacked by groups of people who say things like "WHY ARE PEOPLE SO WILLING TO ADMIT THEY'RE BAD AT MATH, WOULD YOU ADMIT YOU CAN HARDLY READ GOD WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!"

...Uh, call me crazy, but if someone had trouble reading, I'd want them to level with me about it. It's okay to be bad at stuff, and it's okay to admit it! I dunno. I have some learning issues of my own, so even though I love reading, I get it, y'know?

Now, people who can and don't on the other hand... :/

....? I barely passed Algebra, too. Most of the people i know got Cs or Ds and hated it. Algebra 'clicks' for you, or it doesn't - i'm not ashamed of not 'getting' it - don't you be, either!

Seriously, i can only think of one person in my life right now who passed all their math classes with flying colors, and she got her *college major* in math and wants to teach some kind of insane trigonometry-string theory-advanced-math whatever. So don't feel so bad.

Holy shit, what kind of assholes make fun of people who can't read? That's not funny, that's distressing. You're right to be bothered.

I find being bad at simple math way worse than not being able to read personally, but Algebra I isn't what I'd consider "simple math." I mean, it's not Calculus or Differential Equations or anything, but it's also not necessary really. As long as you can use basic math skills like addition and calculating tips, I think you're fine--knowing how to complete the square and solve simultaneous equations are really bonuses.

...By which I mean, "don't feel bad, Algebra is most useful in academia anyway."

You think not being able to multiply with decimal places is worse than not knowing how to read? Forget adding up prices and calculating tips, what about reading the menu?

OP

Oh, I mean I can barely do beginning Algebra, and even stuff like long division and calculating tips is difficult for me. I probably have math dyslexia.

1) Since I associate illiteracy with either poverty and neglect or severe developmental delays, I can only think your friends are complete dicks.
2) When you say bookish I think you mean "artsy", since that's a stereotype that holds up a lot better. I'm bookish and I am great at math.
