[Cleopatra/Elizabeth Taylor]

(Anonymous) 2013-10-02 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
That... is actually kind of cool.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-02 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
They couldn't just call you Cleo and keep the whole name private?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-02 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to think Cleopatra was a normal name (I assumed people called Cleo were all actually named Cleopatra and using a nickname. Later I found out most of them are just Cleo).

Me too! As a matter of fact, I never thought of it as an odd name at all. And it's really a very pretty name.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-02 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not a very good wig.

Well, for 30 BC ...

(Anonymous) 2013-10-02 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Wouldn't that be historically accurate, then?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-02 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
You could just start calling yourself that, you know.

I totally get you, op. If I had been a boy, I would have been Beowulf or Wulfgang. I regret my sex every time I think about it.

eh, I know a little boy named Wolfgang (Wolfie for short) and all anyone says when they hear his name is "are we talking about a kid or a dog??"

Bummer, that would have been fun! IDK how your mom resisted; my sisters' names happened entirely because of male actors with nice voices. (Ron Perlman saying 'Catherine' makes it sound like a super gorgeous name, same Bruce Boxlietner saying 'Amanda' and Marlon Brando saying 'Sarah'.)

(Anonymous) 2013-10-02 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
And you would have had to stay off tumblr or you would have caught shit from SJWs for having that name.

I hope they do realize Cleopatra is actually a Greek name...but I guess that's overestimating SJW competencies.

Depends on the OP's racial background.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-02 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I've already seen wank about casting Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra as being white washing.

Or they could be on Tumblr, and just not give a fuck what the raging SJWs think.
Because crazies and trolls aren't generally the type of people whose criticism one takes to heart.

It's easily shortened to Cleo and names were way down the list of the reasons kids were shitty to each other at my school so yeah, in my experience the name may not have caused you too much trouble. Depending on where you're from.

My mum once worked with a woman who called her daughters Cassandra and Persephone. They were known as Cassie and Purdy. I'm not sure if I'd have the guts to call one of my daughters Persephone even though I do feel I'd be extremely tempted to use a mythological name!

(Anonymous) 2013-10-02 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
That's super cool! Cleopatra is a lovely name imo, and Cleo is a good nickname if you needed one.
My dad wanted to call me Nova after the dub name of a character form Space Battleship Yamato / Star Blazers... I definitely would not have minded!

(Anonymous) 2013-10-03 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Off topic but...OP? You do realize that it's generally agreed that's not what Cleopatra's nose probably looked like?

...Also, this is less towards you OP so much as the people talking about her heritage, but chances are she was a mix. Realistically, it's more likely she was closer to having more Egyptian than Greek in her because her family kept most traditions of the ruling family [including multiple wives].

Don't feel that bad, OP. My mother was studying ancient Greek and modern Arabic when she was pregnant with me, I ended up with a very obscure name out of the Iliad, and no one can spell it OR pronounce it. Pair that with the very Nordic spelling of my last name (and no one can spell or pronounce that EITHER) and honestly, count your blessings.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-03 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
That's what Egyptian wigs looked like though. They were worn like headdresses rather than actual hair-pieces.

Depending on how you feel about your actual first name, you could always get it changed if you really want to.

I've always thought Cleopatra was a really pretty name.

Another shortening for Cleopatra is "Patty". That might be a little old-fashioned, depending on you age group, but it still fits.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-03 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
My mom wanted to name my brother Thor. My dad didn't like it so they chose a different name. I'm still disappointed that I can't tell people about my brother Thor so I kind of get where you're coming from. Cleopatra would have been a cool name, but it does make you stick out so it depends on whether you'd like that or not.
