I don't really know how to respond to this but I do have a question.

Now that you know everything that's happened and you've seen it in Let's Plays would you be able to play and finish the game? (Just wondering)

OP here, and I managed to play through more of it after being spoilered. The jump scares I'm a lot more prepared for. Some of the parts in game are chase scenes where you have to run and hide, though, and I get horrendously disoriented since it's in near total darkness and tend to get stuck on those sections, so they're still scary and frustrating. I don't think I want to play through the full game, but it's less terrifying now that I know what's in the dark.

Heyo OP. Thanks for answering me.

Hmm, that sucks. Well, I don't know. I don't really think it's much of a big deal. You can tell people the truth if you want but you don't have to. It's not really anyone's business but yours. As long as you're happy with where you are then you're fine.

That wouldn't help. I just watched an LP of it and I had nightmares. And this shit doesn't normally effect me.

Ah, that sucks. Sorry.

I've become obsessed with this game! Watching it, that is; there's no way in hell I'll ever actually attempt to play it. Just watching sometimes drives me to flailing my arms about uselessly and screaming in shock, lmao.

I don't know how I ever made it through Silent Hill 2 because I suck at horror games in general. No movie or show comes close to being as frightening.

So uh, don't be afraid to admit that you're afraid?

I made it through Silent Hill 2 by sleeping with the lights on and attempting to convince myself that Pyramid Head wasn't really hiding in my bathroom.

(I used to a horror wimp, but these days I can watch some kinds of horror movies without freaking out. Games are a whole different story.)

Aha, maybe I should've tried sleeping with the light on! (Though I use a lamp even now, and back then despite that I still had nightmares.) Pyramid Head... *shudders* And the bathrooms in general will never be erased from my memory.

Maybe you just need more exposure to desensitize yourself! I can do most horror movies and tv shows no problem (Though I don't usually enjoy them much) but games are extremely different...

A lot of people were apparently very scared by "The Conjuring" but I didn't find it very scary at all. (It was a fairly good movie, but not that scary.) But things with lots of gore can still get to me. I guess I could watch more movies with tons of gore but the cure might be worse than the disease...

Hmm, maybe I should try that one? Wonder if it's on Netflix... Thanks for the rec!

And haha, unless you're very interested in them or want to overcome your fear then it's probably not worth the effort. There's nothing shameful in being scared of horror stuff as that's the reason it exists in the first place!

Well, to be honest there were some things I really did not like about the Conjuring. But it was basically well-made and probably worth checking out on Netflix.

I joke around about how one of my favorite musicians loves zombie movies so if I'm going to date him I have to get used to them. But since that's actually never going to happen, I guess I might as well spare myself the ordeal.

heh heh a perfect fandom secret

Opinions about this game, please? I had never heard of it.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-03 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Basically you are an investigative journalist who enters a closed mental hospital/asylum to check out what the hell happened there. From then on it's about survival and unraveling the secrets of Mount Massive. Standard horror survival stuff.

It does a great job with creating a real, open environment that you can explore while feeling claustrophobic. There are typical jump scares, but the tension that it creates is a nice continuing feeling of dread. The sound design is really well done, especially the character's breathing. IMO the story is kind of stupid and I dislike the infinite stamina, but I enjoyed the game quite a bit.

Thank you so for such a detailed insight!

I'm curious: has anyone tried to start wank over this game on the grounds that it stigmatizes mental illness? (I'm not going to make that argument myself; I'm just easily amused.)

They better not, because it goes out of their way to make it clear that people in the asylum are like that mostly because of the experiments and lack of any order. Not all of them are raging monsters, some are basically comatose, some are hiding and gibbering in fear, some are just... in their own world I guess. You even met some people rational and have the good enough sense to keep out of sight.

I've been in the mental hospital a bunch of times and it's hard for me to relate any kind of nightmare/over the top portrayals of asylums to actual mental illness. So I'd probably play it except for the same reason as the OP -- easily scared.

Although I also don't like to start wank, so there's that.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-03 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
It's 1) creepy as fuck and 2) very difficult, since you can't actually fight, you HAVE to hide/run away. That said I'm basing this off a demo I played, I haven't played it in full yet.

I should get the full game, but idk if I'd ever finish it, haha.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-03 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Does pewdie pie let's play it? Only way horror LPs are interesting to me lol

(Anonymous) 2013-10-03 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
OP here. His was one of the playthroughs I wached, it's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GP5k7I70qlI&list=PLYH8WvNV1YElgJa3uulGCNSMoGtp-_i0G

I've watched it as a Let's Play (by someone who doesn't do the "screechy screamy" thing all the time) and damn, I'm not sure if it's possible for a game to give you PTSD, but if it is, that's a game that would do it to me if I played it myself.
