Whedon's writing is really actor and director dependent. With some writers, anyone can play the parts and anyone can direct it and you'll often wind up with a pretty good product. (Think Shakespeare.) But with Whedon, you really need actors who know how deliver his type of dialog and you need a director who can flesh out his imagination. Otherwise, you have a boring product.

And for me and like you, I see that in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Almost everyone in that cast has no idea how to deliver Whedon-type dialog. The directing is run of the mill. So, the writing suffers. Two episodes in and I am ready to quit this show. I am bored.

I dunno. I've seen a lot of shitty Shakespeare. All the people in it were decent too. There was this disconnect with the work. Maybe I've just seen a lot of Shakespeare though.

I'm pretty sure it would be boring no matter who was cast. The writing is just not that good, the stories and characters so far are cliche. We've seen it already, time to move on.

If you want to see how AoS turns out, go watch a gem from the 90s called Team Knight Rider. A bunch of dysfunctional agents for a secret quasi-governmental body fights crime with hi-tech gear that are based out of a tricked out large transport plane. One of those agents, which includes the quirky science kid and the glamorous female agent, hides a dark secret related to the previous incarnation of the show...yesssss.

I don't know if this is a joke, but I am so glad that to meet someone else who remembers Team Knight Rider.

Me too! I loved that show as a kid.

same :( I was really excited about it but the characters are just not making a connection and the show seems somehow plodding even when planes are exploding in midair

I didn't mind it on Buffy because it is coming out of the mouths of teenagers and it isn't as jarring. But most adults don't talk like that. Well, aside from Stark. But Whedon's dialog fits Stark's personality.

Judging by the other actors' expressions during some of those Tony Stark-driven scenes and some of the stories regarding script writing/production/shooting/whatever, I think you're probably right.

RDJ seems really protective of his character and I think that the "Tony Stark" elements of the various movies really benefits from it.

IF ONLY TUMBLR WAS ACTUALLY LIKE WHEDON DIALOG

IT WOULD BE LIKE 200% MORE BEARABLE

AND THAT'S NOT EVEN CLAIMING WHEDON DIALOG IS GREAT

?

You pretty much nailed it. It makes sense for the Avengers to be quippy in the face of certain doom because they're superheroes, but agents from a vague yet menacing government organization?
