That's what happens when you only immerse yourself in one writer's stuff. They get formulaic. There are plenty of writers that are amazing, but you have to balance it out and only read/watch a little bit of each of them.

I remember when this happened with Chuck Palahniuk for me... I was so in love with his work after the first book, and then I binged on his stuff and after each additional book I started recognizing his patterns and he just got irritating :\
the moral of this story: everything in moderation

Yeah, that's a good point. But sometimes it's nice! I mean, I have one favorite author who's written roughly 200 books. Reading her stuff is familiar and nostalgic; like visiting an old friend you know just as well as yourself.

I think part of the problem is that Joss Whedon WAS witty and everything else people say about him at one point. But... it's not that original anymore, for him or anyone else.

Whedon's writing is really actor and director dependent. With some writers, anyone can play the parts and anyone can direct it and you'll often wind up with a pretty good product. (Think Shakespeare.) But with Whedon, you really need actors who know how deliver his type of dialog and you need a director who can flesh out his imagination. Otherwise, you have a boring product.

And for me and like you, I see that in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Almost everyone in that cast has no idea how to deliver Whedon-type dialog. The directing is run of the mill. So, the writing suffers. Two episodes in and I am ready to quit this show. I am bored.

I haven't really watched any of his other stuff except for Avengers so he hasn't been ruined for me. So I guess that's good. *Shrug* I can see where there are problems but it doesn't bother me yet and for all the normal crap I see on TV he seems decent.

But man, if you don't like him that's okay. It's not really a big deal. Your friends are still your friends unless they're assholes. In which case you don't want them as your friends anyway. You can find something else you like to enjoy. Watch that instead. It's okay.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-02 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to want to be a television writer because of Straczynski and Whedon. And then I knew people in the television industry and realized taht: television is not made by one person. It is made by hundreds, and sometimes shows really hit something beautiful and amazing, and sometimes they don't. It's not just the showrunner, but the showrunner and EVERYONE ELSE. Hundreds and hundreds of people.

Sometimes we just have to be okay with the one thing we got. Lightning rarely strikes twice. We're all human. We want to make amazing things over and over again and make money and have adulation.

But it's the exception, not the rule. Joss will realize this soon, and he'll get back to making nice things. :)

I can't stand Whedon's dialogue. Real people do not speak like that. Also like nearly all of his characters have exactly the same type of humor and use the same kind of wit and it gets even more impossible to believe.

When everyone was writing SF/F characters whose every line of dialogue made them sound like Sir Patrick Stewart knock offs performing a speech, or worse cut-rate David Hasselhoffs trying to be 80s-cool, Joss came along and wrote something different. Quickfire, "conversational" dialogue where people wandered from points, got lost, or just bickered at cross purposes. It was fresh'n'new.

These days everyone writes dialogue like that, so it just seems passe and overdone. Worse with AoS where its all been turned up to 11 for some reason. Probably to convince us that these guys are cool or something. Which defeats the point since if you need to convince the audience a character is cool then the character is uncool by definition. Coolness comes from the audience. Or failing that a leather jacket and always standing next to a motorcycle.

I wonder how many people who think they love Whedon actually love one show and assume that it's the writer rather than something about the concept and acting in the series itself. Because I absolutely adore Buffy and Angel, but I've realised it's actually specific to that universe. I liked Dr. Horrible too, but that does have the benefit of only being 45 minutes long (and certainly doesn't have enough in it to be great if it were on every week).

Joss Whedon reminds me of George Lucas. He made one awesome thing and is now making a career out of trying to make more awesome things without actually realizing why the original thing he made was awesome (whcih was mostly that it was a perfect fit to its time and place), and whenever someone tries to tell him "Hey, this isn't working," he responds with "Then you must be the one with the problem, because I'm awesome."

You don't have to like everything someone does

(Anonymous) 2013-10-03 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I can't think of one artist (writer, musician, actor, etc.) who has a total body of work that I completely enjoy. Most fans will be able to point to a song or an episode or a book or a movie (or even a series)that they don't really care for, even from one of their favorite artists. Maybe you'll like his next project, maybe you won't. Either way, it's fine.

[personal profile] passionate_scholar 2013-10-03 11:08 am (UTC)(link)
I'm enjoying Shield a lot so far, it's different from everything else I watch.
I felt the same about Dollhouse though, all my friends loved it but I watched it only out of fidelity... and I'm the biggest Buffy/Angel fan among them.

well, I loved it very much. But I don't watch it because it's Whedon, I watch it because it's MARVEL

(Btw my favourite Whedon quote: “I'd rather make a show 100 people need to see, than a show that 1000 people want to see.”)

I just find the one-note "witty banter" thing gets dull very quickly. About halfway through The Avengers I realized I disliked most of the heroes nearly as much as I disliked the villain, and between that and the Idiot Ball plot I would have walked out if I hadn't been giving someone a lift home after the movie. It pretty much killed any interest I might have had in the Agents of SHIELD series, among other things.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-04 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like if they'd just kill off Ward, stick FitzSimmons in a lab somewhere and teleconference with them for maybe two minutes an episode, and then filled out the team with characters who were actually interesting, the show would be a whole lot better. Not great, still, but better.
