There's someone posting a fic in my fandom, and they asked for any sort of advice or whatever, so I offered up some, and they asked me to be an editor. And, well, the chapters aren't that long, so I agreed, but one of the things they consistently do is they put two people talking in the same paragraph. I tried pointing that out to them, and even editing their document so that wasn't an issue, but when the chapter was posted, there were two people talking in the same paragraph.

So I asked them again, saying I figured it was just how they copy and pasted it, and they told me flat out that it looks "better" that way, and otherwise, the paragraphs look "too short".

Better to who? Your potential audience that you are alienating because people can't tell when one person stops talking and another begins? Better because walloftext?

IDK, I'm just a little grumpy about it, because why did they ask me to edit, and then ignore those edits. >:(

Have you asked them if they've ever read a book?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-03 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
No- I feel like that would be mean. |D

Do it. Then drop them if they don't figure it out.

Editors need integrity to. If you no longer want to be/are glad you aren't listed as an editor because it's that bad... it's time to bail.

I'd maybe try one more time to explain that it's incorrect and why, and if they still insisted on doing it wrong I'd decline to edit for them anymore. I'd also ask that they not "credit" me because I wouldn't want people thinking that I thought it was okay, you know?

I'd be really annoyed by that too. It would be one thing if the author disagreed with you on something subjective, like the writing style, but this is a basic grammatical rule.

TBH, I haven't been credited at all so far (which I'm okay with; like I said, they're short chapters), but if they did add me, I would be uncomfortable, so I'll keep that in mind.

But, yeah, I might have to step back if they keep refusing to change it. :/

The paragraphs look too short? That's seriously their reasoning? That is dumb. Dumb dumb dumb.

It's up to you, but seems like you've tried your best and this person just doesn't want to change their ways. I'd say drop 'em and move on.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-03 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad it seems like that to other people, I was a little afraid I was overreacting, but it just seems really stupid, to me. Writing isn't about being aesthetically pleasing, it's about conveying your intent, whether that's a fictional story, or a nonfiction research article, and if you can't do that, people aren't going to care about your story.

I'll give them one more chapter, but if they don't fix it, I will.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-03 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I hate this so much. I point it out in fanfic regularly (nicely as I can), because it's just so wrong.

I agree with the explanation part, and the dropping the editing thing if she still does the same.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-03 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
And the worst part (to me, at least) is it makes what might be a genuinely interesting plot, and makes it hard to read, so people might not even bother, which is a shame, I think.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-03 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Have they posted it yet? You should link us.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-03 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but I'd really rather not, it's a small fandom, and there's not a lot of fanfic as it is, I'd really hate for them to get flamed or trolled or anything. |D

(Anonymous) 2013-10-03 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I would quit

(Anonymous) 2013-10-03 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I might if they don't fix it in the next chapter. I tried making a joke about it. I feel kind of bad, because I really want to read the fic myself (hits some of my fav. narrative tropes), but I might have to. :/

If I were you I would ask her to remove my name if she's credited you as her beta. Because people will think that was your call instead of hers.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-03 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't actually been credited- but if that happens, I'll definitely have to ask, because I *know* I'm not perfect at grammar, but that is one thing I will stand against.

Ah, well that's good to hear at least.

Oh god I haaaate it when people do that thing with paragraphs. Haaaaate it. Run away, run away, Simba, and never return.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-03 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh. I'd drop them. It seems like a minor thing, but honestly, if they're going to be that boneheaded about ignoring proper grammar because it "looks better" when the paragraphs are longer, they're going to make stupid decisions about other things, too.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-03 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
They sound like the "advanced/elite literate" roleplayers on Gaia, who care more about filling up pages of inner monologues and purple prose about walking across a room than writing something comprehensible. Drop them!
