I kind of feel like the problem here isn't in writing out their accents, but rather in trying to write serious angsty fic about them

(Anonymous) 2013-10-03 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

Serious angsty Metalocalypse fanfic is one of the few fandom trends I find more baffling than GRIMDARK My Little Pony fic.

yep.

People make serious fic about that show? Huh. That is more mind boggling to me than the South Park fandom.

Let's write dark and serious Toki fanfiction.

"You don't understands, Skwisgaar! These is WAR CRIMES!"

I'm sorry but this just makes me imagine Jar Jar Binks committing war crimes now

You think the Gungans are clean, maaan? You think they got to Naboo City and didn't do anything, maaaaan?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-03 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know what this show is, but I get angry when accents are written out. People do it all the time with Rogue from X-Men. I just want one fic where she says "I" instead of "ah" or "sugar" instead of "sugah". Is that too much to ask?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-03 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
And it gets worse when Gambit is involved.

Much, much worse.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-04 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I know! I mostly ship her with Wolverine, but when I do venture to stories where Gambit plays a big part, I end up just wanting to edit it and send it back to them.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-04 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
This is giving me serious flashbacks to the Gambit/Rogue fanfic I used to read

"Ah'm comin' sugah!"

/drinks heavily

I feel you on the accent thing, it crops up sometimes in Hobbit fic and it always pulls me out a bit(especially in one memorable case where the written dialogue for two characters gave them accents they don't have).

But to be fair though sometimes an author can pull it off and make it work, but most of the time it doesn't for me.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-04 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with the writing out accents thing. Some people can pull them off well, but some people try so hard with them that they end up butchering the dialogue to hell. And then I back button out of that fic like the wind.

How can anyone write serious fic about that show at all, though?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-04 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
I could only take Toki seriously if all his dialogue was written in all caps. I feel like he's full-on capslock all the time.

Although I'm not in the fandom, written accents for characters can be annoying and unsuited to the tone of a fic.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-04 09:38 am (UTC)(link)
I hate these kind of secrets and the people who write them. Fic world isn't a world where everyone magically speaks perfect accentless English regardless of origin, ethnicity or whether it's their first language you fucking racist.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-04 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
writing accents out phonetically actually comes off as more racist most of the time. you can make it clear that a character has a thick accent without actually spelling it out. I'm scottish and it bugs the ever living shit out of me when people over dramatically spell how they think a scottish accent sounds in fic. it's just fucking goofy

(Anonymous) 2013-10-04 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

It is what tag-lines are for. Say that a character speaks with an accent, don't fucking spell it out. It is not only hard to read, depending on the thickness of an accent, but I find written-out accents to be highly offensive as well.

How would you like to see speakers of your language othered and made fun of in that way?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-04 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm Scottish as well, and while I don't write accents phonetically, if it's a particularly thick accent like Glaswegian or Dundonian I do try to convey the accent in the text without making it too obtrusive. It bugs me reading "so and so said in their thick Scottish accent' if what was said was in plain English, it just seems lazy to me. *shrug* Different strokes I guess.

I have a question, how would you transcribe 'gonnae no dae that' if you don't like seeing Scottish accents written out? Would you change it to 'don't do that'? And if it's racist for someone Scottish to say that, I must be an offensive stereotype.

I dunno, when fic/novels are written with accents phonetically, I 99% of the time have to read the dialogue aloud (sometimes more than once) to figure out what people are saying. There's nothing worse than sitting somewhere in public going: "It be all fool-talk, lock, stock, and barrel, that's what it be and nowt else. These bans an' wafts an' boh-ghosts an' bar-guests an' bogles an' all anent them is only fit to set bairns an' dizzy women a'belderin'. They be nowt but air-blebs. They, an' all grims an' signs an' warnin's, be all invented by parsons an' illsome berk-bodies an' railway touters to skeer an' scunner hafflin's, an' to get folks to do somethin' that they don't other incline to. It makes me ireful to think o' them. Why, it's them that, not content with printin' lies on paper an' preachin' them ou t of pulpits, does want to be cuttin' them on the tombstones. Look here all around you in what airt ye will."

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 08:42 am (UTC)(link)
You can still use vocabulary, sentence construction and all other kind of things to convey how someone speaks without butchering every word. The standard spelling does not imply standard pronunciation.
