What it boils down to is that she's a giant plagiarist who lifted the best lines of her HP fanfics from various other media and couldn't be bothered to give credit where it was due. She ended up with a bunch of slobbering fangirls... and a publishing contract for her "original" work.

if it was from her own HP fanfics, then why is she a plagiarist? Give credit to whom?

I'm not trolling. I just don't get it either.

I think you misread what anon said. Her HP fanfics were full of punchlines, and sometimes entire paragraphs & even one several-page sequence, lifted from other works. She gave very few, very vague citations for this hot mess. She then based her original works off these non-original fanfics.

But the actual published work isn't plagiasm.

Basically morons are angry over old Harry Potter fanfic beef. Her work isn't worse than most other shit that makes lots of money.

Not at all. She did plagiarize with her fanfiction. Just because it wasn't official publishing doesn't mean it was a-okay. What pisses people off is that she never apologized, and to add insult to injury, she pulled her fanfic, rewrote it (without the stolen parts), and made loads of money off of it.

It's basically seeing someone become hugely successful by shady means. This kind of behaviour SHOULD be criticized. It's not "HP fanfic wank".

It's not a-okay, but it's fanfiction and it's hard for me to keep a grudge over it.

Fanfiction just isn't serious business. And that's okay. We can like plenty of things that aren't serious business. We have a whole thread on Night Vale.

The reason plagiarism is bad isn't the money. It's the fact that someone is gaining credit for your ideas. Making it about money is just... depressing. It's still just as bad if it makes no money, but is seen by plenty, which CC's fanfiction was. She stole ideas and passed them as her own. That's still horrible, whether it was published (i.e. making money) or not.

What other works did she plagiarize? Other people's fanfic or other sources?

Interesting. Sometimes a phrase or description can be similar to a passage in another work and not mean anything in itself, but a lot of her stuff is blatant and involves entire themes. I wonder if she is capable of original work. Not that I care to find out.

Exactly. Retelling a classic hero's quest story is one thing, sure you can take your own spin on a storyline. But when your story involves using the same kind of language as other works, exact same words without credit or crediting the wrong sources, it becomes more sketchy than I am comfortable with.

And when I used you in the paragraph above, I mean you as a general you.

She also copied several pages, word for word, from some of Pamela Dean's published works. And the revisionist history is that she did have permission to use it, but she got that permission well after the fact, after the shitstorm had hit and she'd already been banned FFNet for that specific piece of plagiarism. Original fic did not credit the author.

I mean, it's fanfiction based on someone else's work in the first place, there aren't exactly rules on it. Jacking lines from another work isn't creative but I can't get all heated up over it's immorality. To me it's a lot like bad song fic. People just copy and paste a whole song and then write a couple of lines about the characters feelings in between.
If none of the plagiarized lines ended up in the published stuff, i'm not seeing the big deal.

As a writer, the big deal is someone else using your words and claiming them as her own by her incredibly vague disclaimers, and getting credit for them. That's lazy, and it's the antithesis of being a writer. She's a cheater who wanted the feedback and shit without putting the effort into it.

I don't hate her because I don't know her personally but as an author with a published book under her belt, it's not something I'm just gonna give a pass on.
