I'm often referred to as "she" on the Internet. I used to find it odd (in real life, I have an Abe Lincoln beard* and a Hulk Hogan mustache), but I'm actually starting to find it refreshing. I don't really have any of the virtues that are typically considered "masculine," so I've always felt like something of a fraud as a man--when people think I'm female, the assumptions they make are closer to my actual personality.

* Which becomes an Osama bin Laden beard if it gets long, so I have to keep it short.

You sound beautiful to me

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Right? Like, I don't want to be creepy but I really want to touch that beard. D: I'm sorry. Unless you're not creeped out. In which case I'm not sorry and may I please touch your beard?

Grow it long enough and you could start putting in braids and call it a Dwarf beard instead.

... Though to be a true Dwarf Beard, you'd also need to get some shiny clips/clasps/beads to finish the effect.

I wouldn't think if mattered, if you didn't mind and you've never actively lied about your gender. I never claimed to be a dude when playing World of Warcraft, I just never corrected anyone (and never used vent, no need to open that can of douchey dudebro worms)

People always think I am a guy on the internet, I don't care and rarely correct them. If it doesn't bother you to be referred to as she, just keep on, keepin' on.

To be fair, you do have a male avatar.

People think I'm a guy too, but that's because my name is Riley. There's a lot of assumptions about that name.

I don't correct them either. It just hasn't really affected my fandom life at this point.

This is why I like anonymity on the Internet. You don't have to be burdened by personal details and assumptions that people make about you.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-04 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
More often than not I'm assumed to be male (I always end up with gender-neutral handles on forums/in games and never get on mic), and though I never actively correct anyone, gender-specific conversation topics come up sometimes that I'll engage in from my own perspective as a woman. I've never really run into any issues, even in some of the more traditionally "masculine" arenas--I've gotten one or two "whoa, really? I thought you were a dude" sort of reactions, but then everything just sort of continued on as normal.

While I don't claim that my experience is a blanket statement, of course, I hope that you'd have a similar response. Which is to say, not much of one in the first place. It isn't really that big a deal, I don't think.

If it doesn't bother you there's nothing wrong with you sticking with it, but if at any point you want them to know I also don't see anything wrong with you mentioning it. They would adjust quickly enough, I think.

I get mistaken for a guy sometimes because of my usernames or characters in games and it doesn't really bother me either. Sometimes it makes me chuckle.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure people in a fandom community I used to be a regular in thought I was female because my name was gender neutral and for the longest time, my avatar was a female character from the work.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
You have to tell them right fucking now. It is dishonest, dangerous, and more than a little creepy. If they decide you don't have a place in their space, well that's just what you get for lying (Lying by omission is still a lie) about your gender.

As far as I'm concerned, it's the equivalent of a man dressing like a girl so he can sneak into the locker room. You must see why this is so not fucking on, right?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 08:27 am (UTC)(link)
SA.

Holy shit, I just read the whole thread and I am literally the only person who thinks this? WTF?

Ok jesus, if people don't mind having a wolf in sheep's clothing then whatevs. I just find it skeevy is all.

Rofl, "a wolf in sheep's clothing"? Yes, because all men are predators and all women are helpless little victims and the evil men only want to sneak in and rip them to pieces. Or rape them. Or whatever. You don't come in contact with the real world very often, do you?

To be honest, I've been in fandoms where men were very few, and where for that sole reason, half of the women of the board treated them with more interest and *they* expected more interest and a special treatment - even though they weren't especially good contributors to fandom.

I find OP's behavior refreshing. And better spirited.

Besides, it's not like he did that on purpose. I've had people assuming I was male online because I thought it was obvious I was female from my pseudo. I've also thought some guy was a girl because fandom his online name was female (I realized later it was a pun about a character's name).

And it never was a big deal when the truth came out, because we never ventured anywhere close to romantic or sexual conversations. We did have long chats, mostly about fandom, and it was interesting and fun and what we were looking for. Gender mattered less to either of us than the content of those online relationships.

It still does.

A startling number of people assumed I was male due only to the fact that I wrote historically informed gen fic and a male character in my icon. That's it. I find it really distressingly sexist, but at the same time, the crowd most likely to do it regularly mocks "fangirls", and yet they take me very seriously when I talk about things like queerness, even in m/m couples (which are canon in my fandom but hotly disputed because eww he's too cool to be gay and other idiotic reasons).

It makes me feel like a liar, but I feel like I can do more to counter the homophobia and grossness if they assume I'm a guy. (I'm queer also.) If they knew I was a girl, they'd take everything I said and lump it under "crazy slash fangirl" and I'd get nowhere.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a gay guy and I RP sex scenes with people who've never asked my gender, and who I know probably assume like 90% of the fandom I'm female

I don't really see anything sketchy about that but w/e

I have to wonder about the following:

How much of your sex RP is slash/gay?

How many of your RP partners are females RP'ing males?

How many of them know you're male?

How many of them don't give a shit and RP with you anyway?

It may not change anything, and it may change a lot of things.
They might be happy with it, or adjust without any consequence, or be outraged like anon above, or start behaving like cooing fangirls due to the "oooh guy in fandom" doubled with "ooooh, gay guy in fandom".

It really all depends of these people, so nobody can give you a real clue, I'm afraid.

IMO, if you feel more comfortable that way and it's just fandom interactions that you're looking for, I don't see a problem with it.

Personally I like that aspect of fandom, that it brings together people about what they have in common, regardless of their differences.

Well I don't mind if you want keep presenting as a female online. I present as a bottle blonde online, but IRL I have been assured numerous times that I have totally the wrong complexion for blonde hair so I've gone the other way and only had red tints and black.

Just make sure that if you ever decide to meet an online friend face to face, you clear up your gender with them, to avoid confusion.
