TV Infomercial Stuff: does it work or not?

[personal profile] lunabee34 2013-10-05 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
I was watching TV today and saw an infomercial for some ridiculous hair dryer that supposedly curls your hair in a bowl that you attach to the bottom of the dryer. What? No way that works. And what about those Genie bras? Do they really support the buxom chest?

I'm curious. Have y'all ever bought anything featured on a infomercial? Did it work? Was it a disappointment?

(Please tell me someone has the skinny on Sonic Ears LOL)

My family got some knives we saw on an informercial. I guess they worked for a while? but they got dull and some even broke.

Also I got a depilation cream that technically worked, but it smelled so foul I could barely use it. I had to leave the thing on for 3 minutes, but it was unbearable.

This is confirming my suspicion that infomercial stuff is mostly lies. Lies and prevarications. LOL

Magic Bullet blender worked pretty well. But it's hard to screw up a blender.

those genie bras did NOT provide enough support. good for layering though if you need coverage or a light sports bra over a standard bra.

This is what I suspected. I didn't think there was any way a one size fits all kind of bra could equally support an A cup and a D cup.

Mostly I found it's crap but a few things I have liked.

Ped Egg: Works amazingly, I use it at least once a week.
Ove Glove: I swear by these amazing things. I have a really bad habit of burning myself, and while sometimes they can be a bit bulky on your hands, I still love them.
Swivel Sweeper: I've had a few of the models over the years, and it is great for mess like a bunch of cereal on the floor, but won't replace a real vacuum.

Things that didn't work.

Smooth Away: There was no magic disappearing hair
Magic Mesh: The magnets really were not strong enough. I always had to close it by hand.
Slap Chop: Did not chop for crap.

Also awesome things that people forget are infomercials: Pro Activ, Oxyclean, The Clapper & Little giant ladders.

Personally I tend to wait for other people to be guinea pigs then google the reviews after new items have been out a couple months. And I never buy for the phone or their website, cause it seems that way too often people get over or double or triple charged.

My family uses the Slap Chop all the time. Granted ours was from a carnival caller, but same item.
ginainthekingsroad: Oscar & Lucinda at the porthole- "I have gambled for pleasure..." (Oscar & Lucinda- porthole)

I tried Smooth Away too, and it did shit all. I don't know why I expected anything when I bought it at 7-11, buuuut...

That's odd, mine used to work, not full on hair gone but it thinned it out, maybe the Australian market got a better one? :| (I think it had a different name so maybe that's why...)

I think the way you buy these kind of products is wise. I know I've seen "As Seen on TV" sections in stores before, and that's probably much safer than buying online or via phone.

Sham Wow/Shammies. Dude, they're amazing. We got a whole bunch years ago and, though they're stretched out and definitely look like they've been used, they still are absorbent as ever. (I'm mostly surprised because I expected them to dry out and crack like sponges do.) We use them at the beach and pool, when my aging dog became incontinent, mopping up kitchen spills, even just wet dogs.

Then one day at the county fair, my mom and I saw they'd made them into SWEATERS. We got one for my surfing sib and best buddy. They love them and wear them all the time.

But yea, they can make stuff do anything on TV. Anyone remember that sunscreen that was body paint?

Yes! I do remember that. I'm pretty sure the "paint" was zinc oxide which is still used as a physical barrier sunscreen.

I had heard good things before about the Sam Wow cloths, so that's good to have it corroborated. :)

Yuss! It wasn't as fun as the kids in the commercials, but it was kinda cool while it lasted. Sure made us want to put on more sunscreen, that's for sure!

One addendum to the shammies: We always wring them out when moving them from washer to dryer. Most times the spin cycle's enough, but there have been times...

Oh that makes sense that they would hold onto water even after the spin cycle. Good to know.
