What do you do to de-stress?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I have been extremely stressed lately (I was that anon who talked about their weird dream yesterday). and last night I had a dream I was using the bathroom and...you know how that goes. : / So two nights waking up feeling weird as fuck. and I have had shooting pains at random times in the back of my skull. I can only assume it is caused by stress.

But growing up the way I did, I have no idea how to deal with it other than ignoring it and hoping it goes away. So what are some things you guys do to de-stress?

I draw some.

Exercise is also good.

I wonder if that might be a factor. Since I got my new job I can't exercise at all anymore (I used to every day). I am generally too exhausted once I get home.

It could be! Maybe try switching exercise to the morning or do things like wallsits or planks that don't require you to leave your home.
pantswarrior: Wild Tiger and Barnaby accidentally tie themselves up. So professional. (work)

Also, if you have a desk job, and are allowed, you might want to switch to using an exercise ball instead of a chair. It sounds and looks ridiculous at first, granted, and initially it's really awkward... but it does force you to strengthen your core muscles just by virtue of having to adjust constantly to keep your balance while you're just sitting at your desk, and I'm not sure why, but it also seems to alleviate my minor anxiety symptoms. (Full blown panic attacks not so much.) Maybe because my body is too busy with those minor balance adjustments to decide "omg something is out of whack omg let's start freaking out about it".

If you spend a lot of time sitting at home (gaming, computer, TV, whatever), also a good place for it.

Video games. Also going out, be it for exercise or coffee or shopping or whatever.

Either I go running or I watch aquariam vids/feeds with relaxing music playing like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sI9OTeTGcrw

Try to deepen your breathing as you watch, moving your diaphragm instead of your chest (if you rest a book on your stomach its easy to tell if you are moving it or not).

I'd recommend running/exercise in the morning-early afternoon and doing some breathing relaxation exercises before bed. Also, I don't like baths but a lot of people do and they could help with your neck, and also the smell of lavender is calming. So those are ideas to look into as well. Good luck!

Journal. Also lately I've been listening to a lot of focus/relaxation music on youtube while I'm doing my homework and falling asleep.

Inhale through my nose for a slow count of three, hold my breath for a slow count of three, then exhale for a slow count of three. Then I repeat that two more times.

If I'm "in the moment," stressed, and unable to get away for a bit, I recite a shortened version of the Litany Against Fear in my mind. It's surprisingly helpful.

Afterwards, reading, writing, and laughing at articles on Twitchy are my drugs of choice. :)

I watch hockey or play guitar. Getting really involved in a sports team puts me in the moment and gives me something to think about besides my life. Guitar is just fun.
